I don't see how you can expect "honest answers" without giving us more information.
Just for starters
Amount of visitors per day, Concurrent users, and other modifications, any optimizations done.

Provide us with a little more information, like:
Amount of visitors /day:
How many users are online at once:
Do you have any other mods?:
How much transfer do you use a month:
How many users / posts are there:
People here will be able to help you easier if you provide them with this info

I would start with a P4 3.0Ghz, with atleast 1GB of ram. That should be enough to start with.

Are you looking for a managed/unmanaged host?
What geographic location will your users be in?

managed host as I am not very technical.
50% of hits from US (even between east and west coast) and 40% from India and 10% distributed worldwide.

Hmm, you may also want to consider a VPS, it might be a good way to get started if you do not want to dive right in to a full blown dedicated.

A VPS with 384-512 Mb would do fine.
