Beginner host here, need some answers :)
Hi there, I am planning to buy myself a personal blog/site where I can post whatever I want like uni projects etc, I just need some help
For a start I was planning to get a site on HawkHost with the 50% off voucher and to buy the domain from 123.reg.
Now. I am looking at making a website for friend, and I'm interested in how much should I charge? I was only planning to get a domain under my hawkhost account and make it run wordpress
I have been playing around with wordpress and have seen how it can be used in non/blogging situations so I was going to use that, or maybe joomla if I have a good try out first
ATM I still have no idea picking out a good host so I'm happy to look at any reccomendations, although because I am a follower of lifehacker, I was either going to use hawkhost or dreamhost if the "client" would need a bigger website
Any help here guys?

HawkHost is an excellent choice. Personally I like to just point my friends in the right direction, or give them some free account if I happen to have a server.
That way they can run their own things like WordPress, Joomla, etc. without having access to my things.
And for friends I usually don't charge.

Its not really a friend as such, she is a friend of my mum who wants to advertise here buisiness
But because of the prices and how good the specs are I think I might as well go with hawk then

In terms of how much to charge, it all depends on what you think is reasonable and how much they are looking to pay. Best of luck!

Yes, just like Cirtex said, the amount of paying all depends what's required by the website. If you think hawkhost will work perfect then it would be wise choice because of their reputation.

Charging is up to you, depending on the technical complexity of the website you're making. However, as Joomla is significantly more complex to use and develop for, it's reasonably to expect a higher charge if you end up making the site with Joomla.
As always, don't just go with the big hosting companies without seeing what their response time & support is like.

Are you charging your friend for you to design it or host it?

I've tried joomla and I diddnt like it, plus I found it hard to get custom themes for it
If I was going to host the buisiness site I would go with dreamhost and buy 2 domains and run it off one account
I have been thinking about how much I should charge and I think I have made up my mind
BUT I have also decided to keep without a website until I know the friend has decided that she wants a site, if she doesnt want the site in the end, or she doesnt get back to me in a few weeks then I will get a site using hawkhost

If you 've tried joomla and you didn't like it, and you found it hard to get custom themes for it , why don't try wordpress. we use it in our site, and we LOVE IT.

Hi,
If she/he cant do it then, you can ask them 50-100$ extra dollars for your job, as they will gain from the website and also you will need to listen to their requests.
If the person is a little bit asking to much, i think you should increase it.

Hi warmo161,
There are a few things I would recommend when making sites for clients, friends, or anyone other than yourself.
First thing is always make sure the client/friend has full control of their account, including domain name. For example, if you have an account with a registrar of your choosing, have your client/friend create their own account to purchase the domain into, or create the account for them. The reason I would recommend this tactic, is to avoid future disputes or issues if anything goes sour.
Remember the registrant of a domain name is the owner, and if your client/friend owns the company, they should probably own the domain name too unless specifically agreed upon beforehand.
If you wish to control the pricing structure of the domain names and hosting packages your customers use, you may want to go with a Reseller. I would definitely suggest a Reseller that offers both hosting and domain registration and potentially SSL support. This way your customer's sub-accounts contain all of the assets they need, is billed directly to their payment method, and can still be managed under your Reseller. If you are planning to use a lot of Open-Source CMS (wordpress, Joomla, Drupal) try to look for a Reseller that offers an easy way to install these, or at least fully supports them on their hosting platforms.
As for which CMS or blogging framework to use, it is honestly preference. If you are familiar enough with a little PHP and CSS you can make a great looking website using most of them. Because they are Open-Source, the communities that support them are vast, offering great technical help, timely security updates, and hundreds of plugins to expand functionality.
I would recommend to try out a few and see which solution you like the best.
Hope this helps!

Joomla is very cool. But steep learning curve. If speed is a factor, might skip that one for now and go with something slightly more user-friendly.
The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything...
they just make the most of everything that comes along their way.

Is this even a business?
Pricing comes down to what your goals are along with what your costs are.
Right now it sounds as though you do not having anything, so I will offer this advice.
1.) Get a reseller account that you can afford to keep whether or not you have 0 clients or 10.
2.) Figure out what your goals are. Do you want to break even? Do you plan on making any money off of this. With that, you can figure things out.
If your goal is to break even, and your reseller account is $50/month, you may want to aim for 5 clients @ $10/month.

There is no magic formula for the correct pricing as every host / company has different needs. You need to figure out what those are first.
