    Personal proxy use (just me) please advise

    I'd like to use the vps as my personal proxy for website surfing and downloading. Only me one user. The vps has 256mb only, and I am running Nginx not Apache.

    I'd like to know which way is the easiest and simpliest to set it up? Because I need to use softwares that only support http proxy, so SSH cannot be the solution.

    It seems tinyproxy can do, but it seems not supporting password login?

    You can just tell your software to connect via localhost:<port> and it will be used as a simple proxy afaik. Have you tried?

    Assuming you run some sort of Linux on your server, squid is fairly simple to set up and uses low resources. There are plenty of guides if you search around on Google.

    SSH tunnels (proxies) are made over SOCKS and are therefore not HTTP proxies in the sense the OP is referring to here.

    if you are a novice, i recommend two things;

    (i) setup your server on a debian type OS, download webmin on it, dpkg -i the .deb file, webin installed, login to it at https://server:10000, accept the ssl certificate as is, login using your root uname and password, go to unuused modules, install squid proxy, get the hang of using that, then use the authentication program as webmin and you're set to go.

    (ii) if you're more advanced, i agree with the gentleman above, you can use apt-get install privoxy, setup the privoxy config file for the port, server name, and ips to listen on. if you're more advanced you can add on ssh and authorization.

    You don't have to do anything on the server.

    Just setup privoxy and ssh forwarding (ssh/tunnelier/putty/plink/...) on your local computer.

    If this isn't being used to serve websites, do you even need nginx? Probably not.

    I you are just surfing and using your own proxy with ssl there arn't really any problems that a normal VPN would solve.

    another vote for privoxy low on resources and easy to admin. a normal proxy goes from like 5-10$. the good thing is for a proxy you just need a good internet connection the low end vps works fine.

    If you use Squid, beware of memory. I doubt 256MB will run too well. But I like Squid too. I think some 1GB for personal use is good. 512MB is the border line.

    I would suggest Squid. I know of users that run it successfully with 384MB Dedicated RAM.

    However, the more traffic the proxy has to the handle the more RAM would be required.
