Web hosting costs
We have been with the same web host for about 10 years. It is a small one person shop and over the past 6 months - his lack of support has forced us to think about moving on.
Recently he informed us that since our site has grown so large... that he needs to charge an extra fee for "hosting add ons." We are being charged - $10 per additional GB of disc space and additional $2 per GB bandwidth.
This brings our monthly costs to $170 for the extra bandwidth and disk space "add ons", plus the regular $39.95 per month, plus a couple of extra $10 charges, one of which is wordpress. So our total monthly bill is approximately $220.
Are we getting hosed? Yes, we have a lot of archival info. on our site, including a lot of video. But this seems like a ridiculous amount to pay per month.
Any thoughts in particular about this costing? Especially this "add on" additional disk space and bandwidth?
Lastly, if we are using about 17 GB of Disk space - is that a ton? How much should that cost us?

Are you on a shared package? whit this amount i'll suggest to go on a small end dedicated server managed, your site will be powerful and fast as lightning and you will be able to cut your expense from the half.

Pardon my ignorance. What's a shared package? A co. I know that does web design - and I like them a lot say that they use a server cloud co. Is this a good thing?

I suggest you
1) Look at the shared hosting offers here on Web Hosting Talk
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=4
and also look at other hosting services.
2) Pick one that meets your requirements for software, disk space, and traffic. Don't be surprised if it costs less than $20 a month.
3) Try to copy your site onto it under another domain name.
4) Test out the site on your new web hosting service.
5) If all goes well, cut your site across to the new service
6) After a month or so, if all is still going well, terminate your old serviceLast edited by tim2718281; 01-14-2010 at 04:56 PM.

A shared package is normally a situation where the host you are working with has taken a server and broken it up into a bunch of little "chunks" so to speak. They then resell these little chucks of server space to customers because most sites only need these small little chunks, not a whole server of space.

It might be good to consider a managed hosting provider who can not only offer all their services as managed but also guide you beyond what a normal host can.

Yes, you can get a VPS and pay much lesser and have better freedom over your site. It is always not a good sign when you are tied tight to a host.

I think price is ok, because you're host lots of videos and 'MP3'?
But you can also need fast support and price, server stablity so good option is move to VPS or Dedicated Server.

I would suggest talking to your hosting provider first and ask them to explain why the prices are high. Try to re negotiate a price with them first before switching providers. Make sure to explain that the support is lacking and what your problems are. Sometimes it is easier to fix the problem with the current provider then it is to switch.

A dedicated server would be a good option, as it seems your site needs more space and bandwidth. Support also plays an important role in running your site which you seem to be duped of.
You can definitely get a much better service for half the amount you are now paying

You're pretty much getting hosed. Overage on a dedicated from the decent hosts (the ones that don't try to screw you on overages) is usually on the order of $0.01-0.05 per GB. But keep in mind that if you get a VPS/dedicated, you will have to manage it yourself unless you pay extra for a management service. It should still be much cheaper than today's option, however.

A VPS / Dedicated server would best fit you, however it might take some time getting used to so be sure when you pick one that you find either a 3rd party management company or make sure the host offers some kind of management so that you will have time to adjust and not have to worry about the server much.
Nothing here right now.

Personally I'd like to see a breakdown of all the services and usages he is receiving from his current host before I'd make any recommendations. There is the off chance he may be getting fair market value but it's hard to know until a breakdown of all services are provided.

Hasser is right, changing host in not always the only solution and it can bring some other headaches. Go through this forum especially hosting offers and find the deal which you can negotiate with your current host and if there is no more option but to say Bye, then move to credible service provider

Excellent advice -- very well put. One thing I'd add is that when hosting your site under a different domain name, expect that certain scripts may not work until you re-set the path.

Choosing a web hosting provider is very confusing. Since these web hosting provider have been served for 10 years, just like that you can not change another one. But you can talk with them about reducing fee. If it will not workout then you can switch it over with their knowledge.

I think you should get cheaper hosting, but remember not to get something just because it might say " unlimited " or "unmetered" get something that seems high like if it said 1000gb bandwidth, since unlimited isn't a real number and they can limit you easily same for unmetered. Good luck on finding a good host ^^ check the web hosting section.

Your getting ripped off just get a managed vps or a dedicated server. It will be much better for you and it will save you up to 140$/month

He has not even confirmed what type of hosting he has, and everyone is quick to point out that he is getting over charged? It could be a highend VPS, or a semi-dedicated account.
I think we need more information before quickly dismissing it as being overcharged.Frank Laszlo - Developer
