Hurricane Sandy
Will survive Data Centers located in the 7 states threatened to Hurricane Sandy?
You expect anyone to damage?

I don't expect datacenters to be affected as they are built to withstand severe weather conditions. Hurricane Irene did not cause any interruption to any datacenters in the areas affected.

I can't imagine there would be any issues, they are pretty bullet proof.

Weather forecasters are also saying that this is the biggest storm we have ever seen in history on the East Coast, its over 1300 miles wide.
Respectfully,
Mr. Terrence

We have had vendors notify us they are evacuating their buildings, so its definitely effecting the service side of the industry in those areas. My concern would be the 10 foot surge they are talking about which could cause major flooding. I dont think DC's are equipped to handle that, but then again I would assume they are well above sealevel.

The news you get from TV or online is always going to be over-hyped. Every storm is the worst storm ever when the news reports about it.
If a big concrete building with servers in it can't withstand 85Mph winds and heavy rains with backup generators in place and items to prevent downtime during storms, you shouldn't have your servers there to begin with.
EDIT: Unless your datacenter is located somewhere where it may be hit with a storm surge or be flooded because of a poor choice in location.[ IncogNET LLC ] Privacy By Design [Liberty Lake, WA][Kansas City, MO][Allentown, PA][Naaldwijk, NL]

I have some of my servers spread across east coast locations. In view of sandy, I ran double backups last week instead of regular weekly backups to offsite backup server.
Hoping for the best...Last edited by ExpertWebHostNET; 10-29-2012 at 12:37 PM.

Update
News :| i riceved this mail right now from my provider:|
Dear
Hurricane Sandy is currently hitting the North East U.S. with hurricane force winds and monsoon rains, and is expected to hit New York and up-state new york today (Monday, October 29th, 2012). The NY Stock Exchange has shut down, as have many businesses and schools throughout the North East. At TurnKey Internet we have already activated our emergency preparedness Stage II plan as of Sunday October 28th - and we have already completed extensive on-site generator stress tests, and topped off our diesel tanks so we can run independent of utility power for several days, and have increased staff intervals to staggered shifts to ensure on-site engineering staff and customer service coverage remains un-interrupted both during and after the storm. We have additional staff on hand in case you wish to call in for a status update at 518-618-0999, or you can view live status updates on our twitter feed at https://twitter.com/TurnkeyInternet including links to photos as the Hurricane passes through the region today and Tuesday, October 30th.
TurnKey Internet's multi-million dollar new datacenter located in the heart of New York's tech valley region already has multiple redundant systems in place to remain online in the event of power loss, fiber network outage, or natural disaster. The facility is a former government building built with 1-foot + thick concrete walls, on a self contained secure lot, over 2,000 feet above sea level. There is no risk for flooding, and the facility is built to withstand Hurricane level winds, as well as tornado level winds. Rest assured our role is to ensure uninterrupted and continuous 100% operation for all cloud services we provide to our clients, and the activation of our preparedness Stage II plan ensures exactly that. For businesses and clients with data located at their offices, homes, or person - we strongly urge you to copy and backup your data to a secure datacenter such as turnKey's immediately so you will have access to your data in the event your business looses local power due to Hurricane Sandy. TurnKey Internet's facility and cloud services will remain at full operation status with additional staff on standby to assist you.
Our best wishes go out for the safety and health of our clients, staff and friends & family.

We use the BurstNET datacenter in Scranton, PA -- right in the heart of the projections. Knowing where their DC is physically located, it's not very susceptible to direct wind damage or flooding. We aren't worried.
I think the biggest threat to any DC is the collateral wind damage. Power gets knocked out, roads get blocked, utility crews can't repair the power in time, and generators run out of diesel because the fuel trucks can't get through in time.
Now is the time to explain to your customers what you're doing to prepare and how well-equipped your datacenter is to ride out the storm. Many customers who normally wouldn't care what kind of UPSes you have or how many generators you have will probably enjoy hearing that information now. At the very least, it puts you in the position of being proactive instead of reactive. We emailed our customers to let them know how prepared we are, and so far we've received about a dozen emails back thanking us for the info and wishing us well.
Our headquarters are in a hirise in downtown Harrisburg, PA. We set up a webcam out our southeast window. Normal visibility is about 10 miles. On a clear day you can see two airports and Three Mile Island. Right now we've got about 1.1 miles of visibility. The bridge across the river is about .6 mile away.

It's very rare for the east coast to have a hurricane like this at this time of year. I'm sure that the datacenters that are in the affected states are probably prepared to withstand Hurricane Sandy with all the modern technology we have.

If the DC you use can't handle a strong breeze and some drizzle, it's time to find a new one.

From what I can remember, most of the DC's that were hit by Katrina pretty much survived, I believe there were a few people on here that were working in one of them and giving a live update during the storm.
Katrina was a Cat5, IIRC, while Sandy is a Cat1, so I do not think that she will cause much of an impact. This account is no longer active!

No, we are not expecting any damage of any kind. However with any storm like this, preparation is key. I will reiterate our original post in that our facility is a former government building built with 1-foot + thick concrete walls, on a self contained secure lot, over 2,000 feet above sea level. There is no risk for flooding, and the facility is built to withstand Hurricane level winds, as well as tornado level winds.
