is there any way to know where a particular site has been hosted and from where a particular domain name has been purchased??

http://whois.sc/domain.com will give you info both on the IP addresses used to host a domain name (ARIN & RIPE IP search) and the ICANN registrar as well.

if all else fails or it gives you a nameserver that won't link you directly to the site, you can traceroute it into the datacenter, and go from there...
