"Local area connection network cable unplugged"

I just bought a pretty good older Compaq with Win2000 software.
I notice there's a red X which tells me "Local area connection network cable unplugged". I checked into Goggle
and read a bunch of confusing stuff (highly technical) and
still don't know if it SHOULD be connected or makes no
    difference. It's a desktop.

Any simple "yes" - "no" - "don't sweat it" or "how-tos" much
    appreciated.!!!

Are you able to access the internet with the computer? If so, then there's probably a second "network" setup for the computer, which you don't need... that the previous owner would've used. You can either not worry about it, or you can disable that other network from within Windows Control Panel.

If you don't have Cat-5/Ethernet cable plugged in to the computer, that icon and message will show up. You can disable the network connection to get rid of the icon.

You will get that error if you have an ethernet adapter on your computer and its not connected to a hub/router/etc...

If you plan on hooking up the computer to a LAN (hub/router) just plug in the ethernet cord into the adapter and the error will go away.

If you are using dial-up, or no internet at all... ignore the error as you aren't utilizing the ethernet adapter.

Thanks so much to you 3 guys. I knew it must be a simple answer
but I'm not onto "ethernet adapters and hub routers". I haven't
learned their language yet. I think it's OK to just ignore it.
    I have dial-up still because it's all I need.

If you are using dial-up, then right click on the icon and click on "open network connection".

Right click on the one that has the X on it and chose "properties" and unselect the bottom two checkboxes.

This is only used with High-speed internet access like DSL/Cable, so dial-up will not be affected.

    Peace,
