Thinking of setting up my first server and had some questions.

Hello,

Let me start by apologizing if I am posting in the wrong section, I looked around and didnt see any stickys explaining the diffrences. I will state hardware, software intentions, and my questions at the end. Here is a general list of hardware I will be using:
2 quadcore xeon 3.2ghz processors
6 300gb SAS 15,000rpm
32-64gb (not sure have to check the rack) DDR2 1066?

This is general due to I have yet to look at the rack.

Want to run This software:
1-4 CS:GO servers at least 2 public 20 mans and 1-2 privates for matches
1-2 BF3 Servers 64man
1-5 Ventrilos (probably 25-50 mans)
Possibly a Day-z Server, runs on ARMA 2

Brief explanation:
I have a friend who owns a small computer company and we were looking into hosting some servers at his new location hhe just purchased. He has servers that he gets from big companies in town so they a little older but not still good.

I looked into a business account for internet through comcast and it seems that the Delux pkg would be enough bandwidth(50/10) unlimited data transfer. Everything I read says 6-10kbs per person per server.

My question is please let me know if this will work theoretically, Too much bandwidth, not enough, server under powered, server OP, need additional racks?

PS have been told to use linux by my networking guru buddy, for the server but i have read that windows works better with the newer games.

I am new to hosting, this will be for friends and LAN events at this store for promotional tournaments.

Please don't try to setup a business on a consumer grade, non redundant connection. Especially one with 10mbps upload.

I am not trying to set up a business just a server for some casual gaming with friends. If the Comcast Business class 50mb down and 10mb up is too slow then who else do you go to? I was looking at speakeasy but they dont seem any better.

You said also for promotional events at the store. That indicated business. I have no idea what is offered in your area, however I do know that Comcast does metro ethernet and other services, but they are quite expensive.

BF3 servers are off limits since the server files are locked to specific GSPs only. Likewise the DayZ staff are unlikely to accept you on a home connection (whether consumer or business grade).

For the price you'd end up paying to Comcast for 50/10 you could rent a half decent dedi and save some money while you're at it.

starting off thanks for all the advise, I have learned that I would have to have a license for Ventrilo to host more than a 8man server, I researched redundant vs. nonredundant... got a price quote from megapath for a redundant line 1.5 up/down @ $399/mo. Learned that you are not able to run many games on a personal server due to the restrictions that EA has put on its games (I understand why but it pisses me off I cant run my own server if for casual play with friends). I still can run mostly all the valve/Source titles on the server for in house(LAN) tournaments for the promotional events. So I guess here are my updated questions.

1.How do these larger LAN tournaments (PDX) run the servers for these games if they are locked by the publishers (e.g. SC2, BF3)?

2. How do I find other redundant isp's in my area that may be more affordable for just casual gamers in our city that we can try to build a gaming community with. Just want to run afew servers where local gamers can play together, thus leading hopefuly to tourneys, prizes and more store business.

3.People have suggested mumble or teamspeak, in place of ventrilo. thoughts on these providers?

i appreciate all of the help and ty all for assisting me in learning more about this new area I am exploring.
