    Offsite Backups

I have been looking at moving all our server backups to an offsite solution. I want to use the built in backup feature in cPanel to upload the info to a FTP server outside of my current ServerBeach data-center.

Any suggestions on how to accomplish and or whom to use for this solution?

Speaking as FreeBSD Security Officer, I recommend not using FTP, due to its inherent insecurity. I don't know what options cPanel has for backups, but if it supports rsync-over-ssh that would be far better.

As for vendors: I haven't used them myself, but I've heard people say lots of good things about both rsync.net and bqbackup.com, so I'd start by looking at them.

    Try webbycart.com

The company installs rsync for you. FTP backups may take a significant hit on your server load.

I was looking at BackupVault from Platinum Server Management, which offers FTP, SCP and RSYNC.

I've been using bqbackup for all of my sites for over a year now. No serious problems. Good speed and great price.

Have had to restore from my backups there twice now and everything has gone smoothly both times. I highly recommend them.

Unfortunately cPanel continues to use FTP for remote backups. The frustrating part is that their local incremental backup uses Rsync! It would be such a simple change for them to extend their Rsync commands to use a remote host.
