looking for a FAST web host

    Howdy

currently we have our ajax, php etc site hosted at dreamhosts

whilst they have been great... with very little downtime... i have noticed that the site does not load as fast as i would like

so............ we are looking for a FAST and reliable hosting provider to switch to

we are located in New York City (if that makes any difference)

if possible... would like to spend up to ± $50/mth (or less )

any recommendations would be greatly appreciated

    thanks in advance

Hmm... how do you define fast? This largely depends on location, network, servers, etc.
Btw, what script is your site using that runs slow on DH?

    thanks everyone for the replies

the website was authored by someone else

    i believe they used ajax

the site loads entirely at the get-go so that navigation when loaded is quicker (there are quite a few images but they are highly optimised)

when the site loads from their site in paris it loads in 5 to 10 sec

when it loads on dreamhost it can take up to 20 sec

    any further thoughts/recommendations

    thanks in advance

Just would like to understand what do you mean under fast web host, so that can be fast by connection speed (depends on network provider and your ISP) or fast by data operating (depends on the sever config)?

    thanks for the reply

fast as in... fast page loading speeds

as per above.... currently we have it hosted at 2 different providers... 1 in europe (currently on the web-designers servers) where the load speed for the site is ±10sec vs ±20sec at dreamhost

i would like to get a host in the US that will provide us with fast load speed times

    i hope that is clear(er)

    thanks again

Hi dingosnatch, and welcome to WHT.

As already mentioned above, its difficult to quantify ‘fast’ and ‘slow’ when it comes to web site download speeds. Can you provide the URL’s of the two locations, so we can perform the tests and see what the problem is?

    All the best.

thanks for the reply and the welcome

i am a little wary of posting the website addresses here for both security and potential spamming

why is this not more empirical than "touchy-feely"... surely there are factors that affect speed like:
    - bandwidth offered by the host
    - how many users are using that bandwidth
    - how oversold the host is
    - whether the hosts systems are optimised to host ajax/php sites etc etc

but then again... i am quite new to all of this... so i might being somewhat naive?

    thanks again for all

    Hi dingosnatch,

You can go to Internet Supervisions site at; http://internetsupervision.com/scrip...eck/check.aspx

They have a free service that will test the download speed of a website from several locations around the world. If you like, post the results here so we can have a look at the difference.

    All the best.

    thanks for the link

    very interesting

results came back pretty similar between the two hosts

however.... i am not too sure what that is measuring... i also have a flash site that is hosted on another server.. and i know that that takes quite some time to load prior to being "active"... however... when i also ran it thru the site above... it came cack as ±1 sec... so i am assuming that it is purely measuring how long it takes to contact the site... not necessarily how long the initial site takes to "load"

    am i missing something?

    thanks

A good general rule of thumb is: Overselling Hosts provide slower service -- Non Oversold Hosts Provided better service. Of course there are many exceptions.

If your looking for lightning fast page loads, look for a non oversold host that can provide a healthy environment for your site to grow. The offers section is a great place to start building your short list.

    Hi dingosnatch,

It measures both the connect time and the time it takes to download a sample. The important figure here is the ‘Kbps’, since that’s the speed that the data can be downloaded off the server; all factors considered.

Obviously if you have a large flash file, then that will load quicker with more Kbps downloading; i.e. if the download speed for a 100KB flash is 250Kbps, then it will take 3.2sec to download that flash, but if the download speed is only 30Kbps then it will take 26.7sec to download that flash.

Also, I agree with the comment that over sellers are generally slower. The faster hosts tend to be the ones that have a decent infrastructure and provide what they sell; i.e. the honest ones.

From what I know dreamhost has a very interesting architecture which allows them to sell a lot of space and, may be bandwidth for cheap. A lot doesn't mean fast. So probably almost any other provider which oversells less will be faster.
If you'll give us URL probably somebody could tell you if you ahve also problems with non optimized web pages. So you'll be able to work on both optimizations - host and code.

It sounds like what you're asking for is a mix of good network backbones and fast processing by the web server. How much space and transfer do you need? Your budget should be more than enough depending on the aforementioned requirements.

If your budget is $50 a month it may be worth looking at a managed VPS rather than shared environments where other users can impact your speed. Approx how many visits and how much bandwidth does your site use?

    hey dingosnatch,

are you a dart player? can you hit triple double-bulls? if so, it's on.

    i'll wait for your reply.
