What your looking for is pretty much standard among web hosts. Their are several that will offer you free site builders, templates, etc.

Do you have access to your current control panel? If so I would recommend backing up your data if you plan to keep your current website, usually web hosts will offer some type of site transfer or migration service so you can get your website up and running quicker.

    Craig,

Sorry to hear about your experience, but there are good web developers out there, and you may also want to look to one who can build a site in such a way you can add your own content to it (i.e. a CMS) if your site allows this type of implementation.

You can also go for a host with a webbuilder solution however these often do not look the way you would like, so be sure it is really what you want.

First step is finding a Host which can take over what ever is there currently, so that everything is rightfully registered under your name (if this is not the case yet).

I am sure you will find a good host for your site. Take a good look around, if you need a bit more help you may want to look for a smaller company which can give you some more personal support.

Good luck in your search and hope you have your website the way you like soon.

Did he register your domain name for you as well? If you can't get in contact with him about it you may very well have to start using a different domain name.

The process of switching your domain over to another host is done very easily in a few minutes, just by switching your name servers to theirs.

You don't have to pay for a yearly subscription, although often times it is much cheaper. I'd say at least try the host out for a few months to see if they are reliable enough so you don't have to go through this whole ordeal again.

Craig, yes you would need to pay a full year of subscription again if you move to someone else, unless they offer a free transfer of your domain (depending on the domain name this might be possible). and you will need to pay your new hosting provider as well. (however this could be monthly).

Do you know if the domain name is registered on your name (also email address in the whois would be handy) in that case you might transfer the domain name smoothly. If this all is however registered on this others parties name, you may need their help.

    Hope this helps.

I am sorry to hear that, you indeed need his help to transfer the domain away in such a case. Next time make sure it is registered on your name.

Wish you all the best in finding a new webhost for your site.

i just want my web address really.
    That doesn't sound too encouraging.

Do a whois http://whois.domaintools.com on your domain and see if you're listed as the owner or admin. If you are, you can try to contact the registrar directly, to get control over your domain.

    2. Is the site 100% HTML based? No php, asp or some other programming language? If so, you can simply save all your site's pages. You can use the browser's view source, copy & paste in Notepad, and save to a new file. Save the images on the page(s) too. If you use the browser's save feature, it will mess up the code.

To edit your pages you could use something like kompozer.net.

Copying and pasting from the browser is a tedious way to get your files off of the old site. I'd try to use a tool like Visual Wget. I'd post a URL, but the board won't let me yet. I'm sure you can find it with Google.
