WordPress is an extendable (via Plugins & Themes) CMS / Blogging software that powers about 17% of the total sites on the web today. You can find out more information at the official site above.

What questions did you have about the software specifically?

Can you just download it to your PC or does it require your own server, or access to a server?

You can download it to your PC but to run PHP pages you should have web server installed in your PC. If you are planning to install WordPress in your website which you wish to put online then you need to purchase web hosting space for this and install it.

This is 100% Right. For the best performance and reliability if you wish to run a website on WordPress you will need some WebHosting. Shared Hosting with cPanel11 would be a great start for you. Some hosts << removed >> have third party software installed such as Fantastico/Softaculous on their cPanel systems. These will automatically install WordPress for you and you can begin to build your CMS and watch it grow into something amazing (hopefully!).

    Regards.

One reason for WordPress popularity is that compared to other CMS, the backend/admin is simple/user-friendly. It's especially suited for small to medium sites. On large sites, other CMS or frameworks may have better features/performance.

It's also responsible for turning graphic designers into webdesigners with little to no coding work or training, which is the reason that 17% of the web is now built on it.

There are better options than Wordpress for ubiquity, but if you want to blend in and have a website that is somewhat confirming to the present norm (and there's nothing wrong with that) then Wordpress is a robust, reliable system. But definitely look at using Fantastico if you plan on hosting your website on a linux server, and make sure you have cPanel. It just means that you're putting all your ducks in a row to give yourself a turnkey solution for not much of a greater premium.

Wordpress isn't just for blogs, you can easily build a website that is a professional storefront or a business site. You must make sure, however, not to go overboard with plugins. The more plugins you have, the more chance of conflict, or, the more chance it will slow down your site. Also, make sure that you have secured your wordpress installation. If you need help feel free to PM me.

WordPress is originally used for blogging purposes. Right now, with its extended functionality, it can be also used to power up a website with additional programming knowledge.

If you wished to run WordPress on your own computer, you would require software to be installed on your own computer. I would recommend installing XAMPP. Hook up XAMPP on google and you will be able to find the download link.

WordPress started as just a blogging system, but has evolved to be used as full content management system and so much more through the thousands of plugins, widgets, and themes, WordPress is limited only by your imagination

WP has changed so many things about blogging, micro blogging, content management systems and web development in my opinion. I respect the project and use it on my personal blog
