Does ICANN require to review domain contact data?

    Hello,
received this. First, thought it was a scam, but after checking mail header data, it seems mail was really from godaddy. Still didn't log. Have you received these mails and is this not a scam?

    >It's that time of year again. ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned
    > Names and Numbers) annually requires that all accredited registrars (like
    > Go Daddy) ask their domain administrators/registrants to review domain
    > name contact data, and make any changes necessary to ensure accuracy.
    >
    > To review/update your contact data, simply:
    > + Go to www.godaddy.com/?isc=ICANN07a
    > + Click on the "ICANN Domain Confirmation" icon at the top of the page
    > + You will be taken to a landing page and asked to enter your Domain
    > Information Key: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
    > + Enter your key and click "Go."
    >
    > Next, simply review the contact information for each domain name. To make
    > a correction, log in to "My Account" with your customer number or log in
    > name and password. Click "Manage Domains," select the domain to update,
    > then click "Contact." If you find that your domain contact data is
    > accurate, there's no need to take action.
    >
    > If, however, your domain contact information is inaccurate, you must
    > correct it. (Under ICANN rules and the terms of your registration
    > agreement, providing false contact information can be grounds for domain
    > name cancellation.) To review the ICANN policy, visit:

It's not a scam. It's just a reminder to check over your contact data and make sure it's up to date.

Not 100% sure it's an ICANN requirement for you to follow the request from GoDaddy,
but it is a damm good idea to, regardlesss.
I try to check my clients domains 'routinely', but lets face it,
some clients can make it hard work.

Probably , godaddy right , icann want it. But the thing that i can't understand , what about domain shield / private registrations ? At this kind of registrations , when someone make whois query shows "false" informations ( actually registrar's information )

    http://www.icann.org/registrars/wdrp.htm

    Whois Data Reminder Policy
At least annually, a registrar must present to the registrant the current Whois information, and remind the registrant that provision of false Whois information can be grounds for cancellation of their domain name registration. Registrants must review their Whois data, and make any corrections.

There's really no stopping anyone from making a WHOIS data report on any domain name, privacy or not. Depending on the registrar, they'll likely notify the user anyway to ensure it's complete and accurate.

All the more reason to be certain you get their emails.

People dislike godaddy because they are so persistent, but in my opinion this is a good thing in the broader sense of the phrase.
I actually always have my whois information out in the open and don't see why that should be a problem.
Haven't noticed a thing in regards to spam or anything, but then again I'm in europe so it might be worse in the u.s.

Anyway that was a bit off topic but I wanted to flag my opinion on godaddy while I had the chance
