how do you deal with unlegal things?

    Hey all,

I'm a newbie... and thinking like a newbie. Ok, i have more than 100 clients. And i was philosophizing, what will be, when I'll have 1000 clients. At this time, i'm dealing with managed.com, which notorious like strict datacenter, which don't like unlegal things. So, conclusion is what i have seriously look what my client are doing and what are they keeping(network cable is still on because of the orisons).
Few days ago i tried to go throw /home but it take to much time. And i
wanted to ask, is there any solution about this? Maybe you use anything? Is there anything? We cannot keep porn, warez, viri libs, trojan horses and etc.. So maybe anyone of you made any script who ex.. scheduled with cron scans everything every night(or this is stupid?). More particular question: how do you monitor your users about all unlegal stuff? With "mc+hands"?
Share your expirience. Or you just pray?

    Thank you for your time

P.S. someone suggested to make a list of all warez programs (txt) or programs, which users should not use and scan every nigh. Quite nice way. If ex. coreldraw*.*. found, then del

first start calling them illegal things..

I would set up a cron to daily/weekly search for files with suspicious extensions:

    .r**
    .mp3
    .avi
    .mpeg
    .wmv
    .wma
    .iso
    .bin/.cue
    .mdf

    And then analyse them yourself.
Making a list of all software/games/movies/music that could be on your server would be an insanely huge task.

The first thing I would probably do is look for a site eating up alot of bandwidth. Sometimes the domain gives it away

    A good plan.
I'd also just make it very clear that you will prosecute them to the full extent of the law (even if you don't/can't) and definitly complain to their ISPs..

Just secure your servers and you should be problem free, run a firewall, IDS and monitor your servers. If you do that you will save alot of headachs later.

    1) Look out for sites using a lot of bandwidth

    2) Chose a provider that won't shut you down immediately upon finding anything wrong with an account on your servers.

    3) If you ever get a report take care of it ASAP, no matter who the report is from.

Scripts, etc. will never catch everything and may give you some false possitives. I'd think you'd be better off with a more forgiving provider, personally. I don't really see how some dedicated providers can shut down clients so quickly when they know they are offering shared hosting, etc.

All those extensions also have legal uses.

Yes, but it will at least help you find the illegal files as well. If you have a 700MB file with .avi it's very likely it's a DVD-RIP. You can easily check a site to see if they offer their own content, if not you can then check it in more detail.

Of course they do, that's why i said you would have to manually exmaine them.

On a similar subject, how would you guys deal with say a 700mb .html file that when downloaded turns out to be a 700mb encrypted .rar?
Is there anything you could do about it? If you can't prove it's pirate material?

I'd suggest html for dummies to the client because a 700mb html file is just too big

he is just pointing that any file coudl be hosted with any extension.

    like WindowsCrack.exe into WindowsRecomendation.doc.
    and etc.

any suggestion you choose will be just a way, but always a pain way and hard to track if the evil wanted to hide.

just use all options posible and like someone suggested be sure your Hoster wont shut you down before telling you.
