    up2date kernel help

    im trying to update the kernel on our server using up2date -u

    it ran fone and said it was installing a list of packages, then it just finished!

    it didnt compile it or anything just downloaded some files, and i dont know where they are to compile them!

    any ideas how to do this?

    I would seek some help with kernel updates if you've never done them before. If something screws up your system might be finished and you won't be able to boot.

    Is it a plain Redhat box or do you have any control panel software installed?

    well i restarted it, and everything seems to be ok!
    The kernel was updated and everything is working again!

    If you use RedHat 8 it can do kernel updates via rpm -Uvh (what up2date does w/ the packages it grabs)... all you have to do is reboot and it will read the new entry to lilo/grub.conf depending on which one you use and the new kernel will be used. If you use 7.3 or previous I believe you have to manually compile in which case you would need to go read up on the previously posted URL. Sounds like you are using 8.0 since you rebooted and its using the new kernel...
