    Installatron? Fantastico? Softaculous?

    Hi all.

I am wondering if anyone has opinions on the script-installing software like Installatron and Softaculous and such...

My current host has always used Installatron, but I know there are many other options. I used this thing extensively.

As I begin my search for a new web host, I would like to take this into consideration. I want to know which tools are offering the best support for applications and their associated updates, especially security-related updates.

Please let me know what you think.

    Thanks!

    Fizzter,

Back in the day everyone used Fantastico, but now it seems that many people are slowly switching to Installatron. Do you currently have a problem with Installatron?

The problem with Fantastico is that it sends out updates so infrequently that by the time an update comes through, it's just about time for a new update. Very bad for security.

We use Softaculous and are very happy with it - I am not very familiar with Installatron.

Here is a Hawk Host forum thread from when they were deciding which of the two to choose for their servers, worth taking a look at:

Nope, no issue. The installatron website has been outdated and horrible in the past, but I have no idea how well they keep it up today.
The issue is with my web host. I need to move. And when I do, this is one area I want to take under consideration.

If Installatron is meeting your needs Ok, I wouldn't recommend switching to something else. Not that Fantastico works any differently, but if you have something that isn't broke, why fix it? Plenty of shared hosts use Installatron, so it should not be a problem to find a good one that does.

I prefer Softaculous over the other ones. It has way more scripts and is very easy to use.

We like Installatron. Certainly no problems on our end.

Ease of use is important, but Installatron is also pretty easy.
The number of scripts isn't really important.
I'd rather see a product that puts out a quality product, with bug-free upgrades, and stays up on security patches very quickly, than one just concerned with the amount of scripts.

That being said, I'm not saying Softaculous isn't good at that too. I don't know, I've never used it. Maybe I will scrape up a demo somewhere and try out the user interface a bit.

    Here's a question...
Do all Installatrons and Softaculouses on all hosts provide the full suite of scripts they support? Or do the host providers get to set what they offer?

I know that you can select which software you'd like to offer with Softaculous, although the license is the same price regardless.

If it came down between Fantastico and Installatron, I'd go with Installatron. However, if it came down between Fantastico, Installatron or Softaculous, I would hands down go with Softaculous.

Currently we offer both Fantastico and Softaculous, however we are looking to phase out Fantastico in the near future (we just keep it around because so many people are familiar with it).

I agree, Softaculous is quite active in development.

I believe Installatron has been around longer though, at least I remember using it a few years back. Dang, those were the days of Fantastico though - I remember you couldn't sell a shared hosting account without it; otherwise how were your clients going to install their darn phpbb board!

I have Installatron installed on one of my vpses because I can get a free one-domain edition. This version of Installatron works exactly like the full version except it is limited to only one domain. It is automatically updated all the time. In terms of ease of use, I actually prefer Softaculous, but Installatron still gets the job done properly.

So I would say, if you are familiar with Installatron, stay with it.

I personally like to go to the source to get the application and install it myself. Uses bandwidth but I know what I'm getting and how it's being done.

I prefer Installatron over Softaculous even though we offer both. Our clients love Installatron more than Softaculous due to it's better looking UI as well as Installatron's solid and customizable backup/restore feature (especially when compared to Softaculous's buggy and limited backup/restore feature).

What is also good James, it fits in quite well with cPanel or should I say it integrates much better than that of Softaculous to where they have their own look and feel to there script installer which I personally am not a fan of.

Installatron is +1 for me as well, I hate to say it though, slightly more expensive but well worth it.

Installatron displays there installer scripts much better overall, which I did notice.

    So cheers for Installatron

I agree with this recommendation. Not to mention, the developers do a great job at keeping the scripts up to date.
Terry you should add Installatron to your VPS Systems, I know you have Softaculous, though how about making an exception?

Softaculous or Installatron both great; i can't take fantastico seriously anymore if you compare them two these two players in the market. They promise updates and new features in fantastico for over 2 years, and even simply updates of software is always taking weeks if not months, while Softaculous and installatron are both within a day of two updated.

Installatron has a more technical background (i do like their way to create your own packages, but this is not super easy to do) their support is knowledgeable. With softaculous i am not to sure, their implementations dont always look well thought about and quickly pushed out. (i.e. the whmcs integration is a good idea; but when they push it to the market it was very badly documented, and thus a lot of questions did arise).

In the end we decided to offer both Installatron and Softaculous so the customer has the choice.

In the end i think it doesnt really matter for the customer which installation product they use; although softaculous gives a much wider choice of scripts as i.e. installatron or fantastico offer.

In some cases, we must agree to him.
Auto Installer sometimes makes arrangements we do not want
