Well, it really does depend on your server specs.
Care to list some more information about your server? If you try to fail and succeed, what have you done?

Some servers out of the box will run better than others depending on the components used to build them. The best way to build a server for your needs is to know what will this server be running/doing exactly? Will this be customer facing or an internal server? Will the server be having high I/O process ran on it or not? How much space will be needed on the server?
With these questions answers you can then look into the servers with the hardware being used in them that will match your answers.

It's not a very popular engine few can comment I would stick to a regular mysql setup or you will be in a world of pain without the expert level skills required to handle lesser-known software.

MariaDB is a self-described "community branch" of MySQL and was started just after Sun purchased MySQL from the MySQL AB corporation. Since MariaDB and MySQL share much of the same base code, I would imagine that their performance and compatibility are quite similar, but I admit I haven't personally used MariaDB myself.
PostgreSQL is another good Database option, and benchmarks I've seen state it performs better then MySQL in terms of complex queries (sub-queries, joins, etc). I can easily and highly recommend PostgreSQL. It also comes with the added benefit of being VERY liberally licensed - so you can pretty much use it however you can imagine.
Hope this helps.Jordan Michaels - viviotech.net
