Thread: static ip

    Question static ip

    Hi,

I'm trying to decide on a hosting package and there is one item I don't know how to evaluate.

Some packages offer a "static IP". What does this mean and what advantages does it offer.

    Thanks for you help.

    Hi,

A static IP is a number that is assigned to a computer by an Internet Service Provider to be its permanent address on the Internet. Unlike DHCP you will always have the same IP address. You will more then likely need it for hosting depending on what you are planning to do.

    Hope this helps,
    Marty

    Make it simple.

Static IP is a unique ip address for your account.

Assume your web hostin company assigned you 200.200.200.1 (static ip).

You can load your site with http://200.200.200.1 or http://www.yourname.com.

    Thanks to all.

I understand that it is a unique IP and I can access the site using that IP rather than the name. I understand that this would be important during the first few days until names servers have been updated. But are there any other reasons why I care if I have a unique IP.

It is a very simple site, just one form which I will handle with formmail.

All this came up because I read many good things about Wizards Hosting in this forum but their least expensive hosting package does not have a static IP.

It is bad practice (especially according to ARIN) to use an IP address for each virtually hosted web site that doesn't require one.

That said, here's what we tell our customers when they ask the very same question.

    ---

Some organizations refuse to order web hosting unless they get their own IP address. They base this on the idea that if other organizations are sharing the same IP address, that it is possible that their web site could be banned by NetNanny or placed into certain spam black hole lists, by fault of one of the sites sharing the IP address.

We actually would handle such a situation by moving everyone to a new IP address, and would litigate against any customer who would participate in actions that would cause this type of problem. This has never happened, and hopefully never will.

The IP address also allows you to install your own SSL certificate, if you have one through a Certificate Signing Authority.

A seperate IP address is also usually necessary to have an anonymous FTP server on the standard port (21,20).

Also, we can setup reverse lookups against the IP address to show the organization's domain name, instead of bitServe's.

    So, the four issues are:

    1. You are not effected by the actions of those sharing the IP.
    2. You can install your own SSL certificate.
    3. Capability for your own anonymous FTP server.
    4. Reverse namelookup "branding".

We used to have to be able to show that your site required it's own IP address in order to prevent violating ARIN's Shared Hosting Policy on the assignment of IP addresses, by assigning you a seperate IP address. Even though ARIN has since then revoked that policy, it is still good practice not to use up IP addresses for virtual hosting when not required.

    ---

And let's not forget that IP address space does cost around $700 for a /24 from ARIN last I looked. But I haven't been able to get to their site since it appears to be unavailable right now.

You don't need a static IP to access your account before DNS resolves. You should be able to access your account via an alternate URL. Example: yourhost.com/~username

May I add... If you are a reseller and have your own nameserver then its to your clients:

    resellerhostname.com/~Client_Username/

before your client's domain name is propagated and pointing to your Host provider's server. Please ask your client to upload an index page or some files via ftp using Username/Password to their allocated space to test it.

No, no, no, no. That just isn't true, a static IP is one that doesn't change, some ISPs will give dialup customers an IP that doesn't change every time they dialup. All web hosts use Static IPs that don't change, what you are reffering to is a unique IP address for your site (A dedicated IP) that is used only by your site and no other.

Exactly. The term "static IP" is being misused in most of this thread. It should be used as opposed to a dynamic IP... usually meaning that when you dial to your ISP you are dynamically assigned an IP number which you use through that session, and you'll likely be assigned a different one the next time you connect. Some ISPs will assign the same IP number to you every time you connect; that's a static IP.

In hosting whether your site has its own unique IP number or whether you share it with other sites, it will always be the same one. So in either case, it would be "static" or unchanging.
