What would be Ideal for Cloud Hypervisors ? Dual E5620 or Dual E5 2420

    Lads,
We were setting up our OnApp Cloud Infrastructure and we are considering either Dual E5620 or Dual E5 2420 CPUs for the hypervisors.

Offcourse Dual E5 2420 is a latest CPU but just 1.9 Ghz while Dual E5620 CPU has 2.4 Ghz.
I have checked the benchmark results and E5 2420 does better than E5620 but I am not completely sure how would it work when it comes to Cloud Setup.

    Any Wise Recommendations Please ?

E5 is much better because of the latest architecture.

Sure! But do you think VMs on 1.9 Ghz E5 2420 would perform better over 2.4 Ghz E5620 ?

Clock speed of a processor is not the key performance factor, check other factors too.
    architecture can make real difference.

    Yes. Check out the benchmarks:

The E5 is hex-core vs the quad-core of the E5620. With dual procs you are getting 12 vs 8.

Yeah go for E5 will be the wise move and the E5620 is pretty old after all.

The E5 will be the way to go, the E5-2620 is a very popular processor at the moment so you will find good deals on them.

Honestly with HV's I try to give the customer what will work best for their budget and needs considering all hypervisor nodes would need to be at least Dual cpu. In a perfect world the E5-2600 Romley family(latest and greatest from Intel) would be the way to go. Often times you can find servers such as the e5620, or e5645 server which are both Dual cpu servers that can go to 128GB's of memory or more. My opinion is go with what you can afford for the time. If you can go with a version of the E5-2620(V1, V2, or V3... the V1's are pretty cheap these days) but you can still get by effectively with a dual e5620 server for HV node. This is based on the fact you an easily or should be able to easily add more HV's when needed.

Both are old and slow. In the older line, an l5639 or l5640 would be a better choice. In the newer line, e5-2620 would be a better option.

I would go with the L5640 or higher over the 5620 and they are great for HVs. It is just barely below the E5 you listed and if you jump up to the 5660/5680 they are faster than that E5.

CPU clock speed has little to do with the performance. You should opt for 1.9 GHz E5 if performance is your priority, while 2.4 GHz E5620 would suit well to clients with budget constraints.
