depends on how busy your website is. If you get a lot of traffic every day a shared hosting will not be able to give you what you want.
With a VPS even that you are still on a shared enviroment you get a better performance than a shared hosting package. ( depends on the provider too )

You share server resources with others on Shared Hosting. So there are many limitations such as max http/mysql connection, sending mail, using CPU, RAM... etc. But you can define most limitations yourself on VPS and it guarantees you a RAM/CPU.

You get more power for yourself on your server and get root access, its like having a personal computer instead of sharing a computer with the whole house and everyone in your family.

It actually depends on your monthly traffic, monthly page visits, and also the amount of bandwidth and also your monthly budget.

If you have the money, get a dedicated box.

Very few sites need a dedicated server; many are churning along just fine with a small VPS. A VPS has some advantages of its own over a dedicated server anyways.

But why pay for more than you need, even if you have the money available?

The decision to get your own server (either VPS or dedicated) should not be made on the basis of traffic alone. You can always find a host who is willing to offer high performance for a busy website. That price for premium hosting would certainly be competitive with the cost of a managed VPS, and would be a whole lot less trouble.

There are more compelling reasons to go with your own server. Since you have your own operating system installation, you can customize your server to be optimized for anything you like. With root access you can completely control your hosting environment and even handle your own security. You also have the option to sell excess resources to clients, which can offset all or part of the the cost of a server.

It depends how busy your website is, what your website is and your budget. If you are sharing a server with many other users, there will come a point where you are using too much CPU / Memory and it becomes unfair for other users on the machine.

Although you get your own dedicated resources with a VPS, you also have to bear in mind you will typically have a fraction of the resources compared to a large shared server. If your site currently relies on MySQL heavily for example, you need a VPS with a fair amount of RAM so you can cache table data in memory, otherwise performance will be poor and it may even be unstable. This could get expensive.

On the other hand some providers offer clustered or load balanced hosting which suits high traffic sites better, or if your website isnt particuarly MySQL heavy you can get a surprising amount of traffic from a small, well-optimized VPS.
