    2012

    Recognize the date?
What do "you" expect will happen that December?

Let me give a little update to those who dont know.
Many things end on Dec 2012.
This includes Chinese Prophecy and the Mayan Calendar, as well as many others.

So what will happen in Dec? All the planets aline together in a straight line with the sun, once every 25,800 years. Scientist know what will happen, but not what effects it will actually have. They say it could cause a total switch of our mantle and magnetic poles. In other words, North America could become the new South Pole as an example. The sudden change in the switch would cause our mantle to rotate around.

You can disregard the Bible, fine. However, many "non-religion" prophecy have stated what will happen in the end. It gets hotter, water rises, etc, etc. But all those prophecies, religious and non-religious alike, go no further than Dec 2012.... well, the ones that give calendar type events anyway.

Even the new web-bot gets a ton of accurate hits, but cant see past Dec 2012. http://www.google.com/search?q=web-b...&start=10&sa=N

It will be like when the year 2000 came around and many thought it would be the end... or in 1900... or whatever.

Jan 2013 will be here... and my guess is you will be posting here complaining of your arthritis.

If we do not make it to 2013… who really cares? We will be dead. lol....

Wonder if I can start a cult and get people to sign their houses over to me....

The end is near - everyone start having random sex with everyone else now!

Seriously though, that's kind of interesting from a larger perspective. 25,800 years is one Platonic year, the amount of time necessary for the earth to complete one axis "wobble." The earth sits at a pitch off its central axis point, and every platonic year, it does a full wobble around the circumference of that offset amount. I've always thought this meant our four seasons shifted ~6 months in either direction depending on where we were within the platonic year. If 2012 is the end/start of a new platonic year, that would mean in exactly 12,900 years, summer will start December 21 in the Northern Hemisphere. Please awaken me from my cryonic tank around then so I can see if I was right

    Platonic Year info.

LOL, they will have a cure for arthritus by then

If science is correct and all planets are held into place by gravity and magnetics.... thats a LOT of power. I can see how when all just passing by each other at different intervals would have more of an effect up preventing our spin around the sun from speeding up or slowing down.

But was happens when they all line up straight as an arrow with both the sun and the black hole at the center of our galaxy? (which the mayans knew about btw and our scientists recently discovered)

The Mayan calendar is more accurate than our own. Their knowledge of the environment, even space, was better than us ... as shown with the black hole in the center of the galaxy stuff. It's more often correct than wrong... and it stops in 2012. How can so many predictions/prophecy/calendars, etc all over the globe stop on the same date?

Assuming science is even remotely correct, that our magnetic poles could change and the current polar caps become temperate areas and other places start freezing.... it's not the end of the world. Just what you think is north will no longer be north. I'm sure there will be earthquakes, volcano, and massive sea activity, but I dont think that will cause our extinction, just maybe set us back a couple hundred years, maybe.

Not to mention, isnt NASA tracking a huge asteroid that could hit us in 2012/2013 sometime? I can understand not believing prophecy/predictions by people hundreds or thousands of years ago... but now when our own modern science says it may very well happen....

It's at least worth enough to look at rather than mock.. So... I'm going to go make myself rich, rent a shuttle close to that time, and get the best seat in the house.

According to my astronomy software, positions relative to background stars on Dec 15, 2012 will be:
    Sun: Scorpius
    Mercury: Scorpius
    Venus: Libra
    Mars: Sagittarius
    Jupiter: Taurus
    Saturn: Libra
    Uranus: Pisces
    Neptune: Aquarius

We're still talking about Mayans, right?

It's 2036, and there is a 1 in 10,000 chance of an impact (less as time goes on).

The Asteroid is Apophis, and 2036 is not it's next come-around.

One possibility is to put a radio beacon on the asteroid, as if it were a member of a wolf pack in Yellowstone . That would let astronomers refine their predictions of the asteroid's potential orbit when it next approaches Earth, in 2012-2013. Given NASA's recent success in firing a probe at the comet Temple I, planting a beacon on an asteroid seems doable.

Unfortunately the 2012 myth won't be nearly as lucrative to people who manage large infrastructure projects as the Y2K myth.

    Which sucks

    Y2K12 bug.

I personally choose not to believe into such, and just wait until it does (if it) happens. If it happens, we'll be dead; so we won't even realize it. If it doesn't, then life goes on per normal.

I was reading about this after you posted it... it seems one argument is the mayan calendar simply starts over at 2012... I guess that would make sense, but I don't know enough about it to say that is even a plausible answer.

Guess I never really got into the doom and gloom predictions that seem to happen more and more these days… not to say that the planets in one line could not have an impact on Earth… who knows for sure… it is all conjecture at this point. We will see after it happens… nothing to really do but wait it out… no sense in getting an ulcer over this….

I'm tired of all the war and political talk that everyone gets ulcers about and cant do anything about. I think I'm just ready to talk about something else. The way this world and all it's corrupt governments and giant corporations have gotten, a worldwide catastrophe could be a good thing. It would knock the politically powerful and the rich CEO's right back to our level... and people who "truly" mean well for the people could have the chance to take over.

Well then.... I guess we will all wait until you run for office, and then see what happens. It will be interesting to see what your angst will do when you try to hold office. Best wishes, and good luck.

I didnt say me..lol. Like most people, my interests are only to serve me. Also like most people, we have the same interests, so work well together for a common goal. I dont want oppressive and greedy government, or greedy overly powerful corporations such as OPEC and other monopolies. Do you? If not, then we have the same self serving interest

Sounds like they would get knocked to "our level" and we would get knocked to a level lower than them... in my case, I guess that would mean living in the woods or on the side of the road in a box.

I get what you are saying... just having a little fun... yea, sometimes things get to be a bit too much... maybe then it is time for a vacation or do community service or spend more time with family... all those things normally put life back in perspective....

If Mayans had correctly predicted the future of their own civilization and saved it from destruction my grandfather would have probably owned a cosmic energy powered laptop computer.

Dec 2012 will be much like all the previous Decembers. Somewhere in the world a group of morons will blow up a market killing innocent women and children in the name of their GOD. In other parts of the world people will discuss the pros and cons of killing people in the name of GOD. Somewhere someone will start a thread that George Bush and the evil NeoCons are somehow still destroying the world. Another will start a thread wondering why people thought something extraordinary was going to happen in 2012. And yes I am sure that somewhere some group of morons, convinced that the end is coming, will climb to the top of a hill, line up their crystals, chant while waiting for the planets to align, then kill themselves in order to please their GOD.

Nope, it just once again emerges into view in 2012. Our view of the asteroid is blocked from 2006-2012 (not sure why it is out of view; most likely the sun is blocking our line of sight).

"SPACE.com was provided a copy of the paper Schweickart will present. In it, he carries out an informal analysis of the situation. He notes that the asteroid will be mostly out of view from 2006 to 2012. When it re-emerges, fresh observation will likely reduce the 2036 impact chance to zero, he said."

Nothing will happen. Astronomers wouldve forseen this and wouldve started to prepare, I dont think they'd be dumb enough to overlook it.
