Chrome's Homepage Penalized for Paid Links

    Wow! That's interesting
    Google penalizing it's own product.

    http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/

If you search for [google chrome], you'll notice that Chrome's homepage is no longer the top search result.

The explanation is that a video ad for Chrome was used in a lot of blog posts that promoted Chrome and one of the posts linked to Chrome's homepage without using the nofollow attribute.

"Buying or selling links that pass PageRank is in violation of Google's Webmaster Guidelines and can negatively impact a site's ranking in search results," explains a Google article.

Even though Google didn't actually buy links, it's strange to see that a Google Chrome campaign generated a lot of low-quality posts. Danny Sullivan says that "the bigger issue in this has always been the garbage content that was produced by the campaign, 'thin' material that Google has fought to keep out of its own search results. I'm still trying to understand how Google failed to understand that the marketing companies it engaged with would produce this." Actually, the whole story is difficult to understand. "Google seems to have contracted with Essence Digital to have a video ad campaign be run across the web. Apparently, Google had no idea how Essence Digital was going to actually run the campaign or make the video ads appear across the web."

This just points out a huge weakness in the Google ranking system.

Apparently, you can demote a competitor's site by spamming low quality links from known paid sources. Considering how inexpensive it is to do this...wow! What a horrible decision on the part of Google to make this part of the SERP algorithm!

That would be surprisingly effective under the current system. It is interesting that the algorithm has not been altered.

It might be even a publicity idea from google. but really funny to me. though their page might not be the first page, but their application is surely is. hence i think there will be no problem for them

And? That doesn't mean Google can´t just use their Adwords network like they are using right now.

If you search "google chrome" you will get an Adwords paid ad on the first position. And yes, Google doesn't need to pay it.

Just like Chrome ads have appeared in almost every website that used Adsense, and im sure Google didn't paid those webmasters either for each click.

What affects the rest doesn't affect them, because we have to pay to get that Ad in the first place, they have it for free. Imagine if Google someday offers hosting, they will get that spot for free for them and nobody else would be able to rank them out.

I think its scary because Google has long left the search market and is trying to enter almost any market. And Google is the Internet for most people.

Ever heard the saying "Jack of all trades, master of none".

Google should stick to search.. it's what they "master". I guess big companies are never content. They should really watch themselves though, they can't be the "master" of everything.

Someone will come along and take market share away from them eventually.. and then they run the risk of becoming jack of all trades, master of none.

    Agreed.

I couldn't care less for the future of that stupid companies that are voluntareeing Google their Web site access data using Analytics, their audience putting image links to Google+ (or FB), or their business relationships using Google Apps services.

What I'm concerned is the fact Google is determined to gather market intel even if your company actively REFUSES to be included in any data base kept by Google. E.g. Google Public DNS (8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4) gives Google a glimpse about who/where/when is interested in your site.
You will only find out how good a provider is when the going gets tough

FB is harmless. Google incentives me too Adsense sites/blogs and searches return a bunch of trash instead diversity. Google has great responsibility for this pollution.

It's an interesting article, but you realize other search engines do the same thing, right? Google is just seen as most evil because they have the most influence. Look up "music" in Yahoo - you'll get Yahoo video results, not Youtube. I assure you if Yahoo or Bing had social networks, they would be flaunting them too. In fact, wait for it!

Check the list of infractions from the link you sent. Not all, but some of the things they criticizing Google of doing, other search engines are already doing as well. Not everything (because they don't have as extensive a service portfolio as google), but some of those things they're using to call Google evil seem to be pretty standard.

I'm not saying it's right for anyone to do certain things, only that Google tends to get singled out because it is the most successful (and, in my experience, search results are still the best, as hard as it is to admit sometimes).

Google tends to get singled out because it has 70% market share -- its behavior affects lots of people and companies around the world. Moreover Google evil actions aren't reactions to competitors or market conditions and arguments like Google does the same anyone in the same position would do should not be accepted.

I'm not saying they're right, I'm just saying their not unique.
