Is choosing hosting location based on market worth it?

A company website owned by a friend of mine is hosted on a local-based webhost. While it makes sense (it's a local company), I always wondered if it was better to host it on a foreign-based host (maybe US or UK) and just use a top-level domain, since local hosting choices were few, hard to find, and relatively expensive. For around $3.67/mo they only got 100MB space, 1GB bandwidth, no add-on domains, 5 email addresses, and 1 MySQL database. US-based hosts offer ten times that for $3 or less, with equal or better support.

So is hosting where your business and market is located worth it, or will getting a top-level domain be enough?

It's good to host the web site near where most of it's viewers are coming from.

For example if you have a web site selling products to people in new York then it would be best to have your server located in or near new York.

There are tons and tons of hosting where are your viewers from mainly and what's you main requirements and budget we can suggest you a host.

There's also things about location like if you host your site offshore in UK for example then you would have to follow there laws and not need to worry about USA laws because the site is located there.

If you use a TLD that is owned by an American company then it still can be seized by ICE even if hosted offshore. This has happened a fair amount of times lately.

To answer the OPs original question, for some people they want local companies and they tend to offer a more personal relationship with their clients. It's all a preference thing, that's all it boils down to I feel.

The geographical location of the host server does matter, but it is not a key factor for ranking a website in the local search results. So it is OK to host websites in other country or in other sate or region.
