I also remember that logwatch file had some 4800 drops on eth0 this morning....I myself don't understand all that stuff but I sent it to my server admin guys.

Ya David has some similar issues also.

    Thanks.

    Indeed.

No locks since the last reboot last night at 1am. I upgraded to cpanel edge at that time. (knock knock on wood again).

    Here's what I know:

Multiple images of RHEL from them have this issue.

Multiple iterations of hardware configs have this issue.

Kernel panics happen anytime, with varying frequency.

There's nothing logged that shows there's an issue

The console messages during a panic are varied

Average reboot times are an hour

No remote reboot ports are available

OS restores don't work - there's apparently difficulty in even fully loading the software without a lock

    And uh, that's about it...

Does FreeBSD works ok with multi-processor servers such as this Dual Xeon with HyperThreading?
I have the same server config with servermatrix running freebsd 5.1. It's been working fine.

Mike from Rackshack wrote a perl script to monitor the activities of the server before it goes down. Has anyone of you tried it yet? It might give you some clues why the server goes down too often.

Aren't you guys glad you switched from unproven and unreliable versions of RedHat, such as 7.3-9, to the rock-hard and stable RHE?

Sorry, don't mean to poke fun -- it just means I'm signing up for progeny and keeping my 7.3 box!

Not 2.6, 2.4.24 patched with the libata stuff to allow for the SATA drive to work...

Tried various versions of the kernel itself, no go.. including hand-rolled and redhat versions.

I'm going to rh 9, I think. It panic'd again and dropped again, blowing the edge version is running better out of the water.

Kudos to the night team - reboots have happened in about 5 minutes, which is a *huge* relief....

    same problems

I have the exact same problems - it is not due to load at all the server will just die and respond only to pings. Servermatrix was trying to build me a new kernel but both versions did not work - one had a seg fault and the other also caused the machine to have other problems. They compiled binutils and that did not help. They tried 2.6.1 and did not get it to work.

The problem is definately a bad kernel -

I believe after reading through all these posts it's an IO problem where the kernel is severly flawed

    http://forums.ev1servers.net/showthr...sponding+pings

I had another box die for no reason 5 minutes ago - reboot will not work because it will kernel panic on reboot - has to be manually restarted

I was told this is a global problem at servermatrix and not just me - I thought I was going crazy and it was just me - but it's not.

I am still awaiting a fix - I have had this problem for about a month now and it's really affecting my business in a bad way and I need it resolved. Since they have no solution if you have this problem please demand a fix - maybe we can get them to put more resources towards this

If it is a kernel fault for something which is not developed by SM, I am not sure what you could really do except to hopefully find a good kernel before too long.

    kernel

I'm not blaming them- I am just trying to find a solution

If there is no solution to fix this kernel I have to ditch the boxes because like so many I can not afford to wait

What are others doing besides just waiting for their boxes to die?

I'm working with management at theplanet/servermatrix right now, and they've been MOST helpful. I'll post a full synopsis once I get time, but it's been made very clear to me that servermatrix/theplanet will work with you to get these types of issues resolved.

  21. #46
Is it just a bad build image that Theplanet/servermatrix has or it is a real problem with the current RH Ent kernel which would affect any server using it ?

I would say, it's a bad build image that SM has.

    bad

This is the bad one - proven to crash at pure random - I have had this kernel on 4 boxes and all had a problem - all RHEL

Thanks for the clarification. From what I understand from the postings here, it seems to only affect the SMP build. Hope there is a quick resolution as I understand a number of people are affected by it.

    thedavid you said..

I'm going to rh 9, I think. It panic'd again and dropped again, blowing the edge version is running better out of the water.
