Pingdom bought out by Solar Winds

What do others make of this?

Pingdom have always been a good company. Their Swedish ownership seems to have contributed to a certain corporate culture (or so you'd think, given we only have access to what they let the public see of that culture). Their products have been solid and reliable - they work. They've recently had some issue as they switched over to some different monitoring workflow, but they took the criticism on the chin and re-enabled some of the old settings. All in all, I like them.

I've never heard of Solar Winds, but they seem to be a big player in their own field.

My heart always sinks when a good company is bought out. It needn't be bad. Sometimes the extra investment gives scope to improve. Yet so often the new management tries to make efficiency savings that have the effect of making things inefficient, and any distinctive corporate culture of the purchased company is seen as a threat to the unity of the bigger parent brand.

So I don't know whether this is a good thing or not. Only time will tell. But I'd love to know the instincts of others around here.

Does it mean the end of the free account, which these days they tried to hide? The problem is they are the leaders and there is no good competition around.

From my experience, Solar Winds are a terrible company to deal with who like to phone you constantly trying to sell you anything that they can.

Their own products (Orion NPM and APM are what I have the most experience with) aren't great either - slow and unreliable in my experience.

I have to say that I think you're right about what will happen to the culture at Pingdom.

Can only be a good thing (maybe not for the small guy), But SolarWinds is top notch when it comes to enterprise monitoring solutions.

This is surprise, solar winds expand online business by acquired pingdom. They are great company but too aggressive when selling their products. I own NPM and LEM from solar winds, good monitoring software and other tools.

Huh? Their free plan seems pretty real to me: https://www.pingdom.com/free/

Agreed! Solarwinds definitely is a good sales group. They will try to upsell anything, or fill your page with so many ads you have to buy

It's against their TOS for me to sign up for a second account to test this. But they've always offered two distinct things: (i) A free trial for any paid plan, (ii) An entirely free plan with only one check.

There's nothing on the site to say that the URL I just linked is only for the free trial - I think they do still offer a truly free plan provided you only want one check and one RUM.

We own the entire Solarwinds product line and use it extensively. They are really great products albeit expensive. I sure hope they include this in something and not make it a separate package.

I hope they limit themselves to keep it the way it is...
