    Major confusion about site

okay so I moved my site between hosts a few hours ago.

I checked Who.is and the nameservers are updated properly.

Now i know it takes the site awhhile to propogate and all that stuff but i am a bit confused.

I and a few of my memebrs are seeing something different. It shows we are online and we are posting(I migrated the database over to a new host) and we are doing our posting.

But other members are seeing an entirely different site with different members logged in and i can't see their threads?

Like i said, I know it takes awhile to propogate but will all the post end back up int he right databse?

It looks like for few members propagation takes place already.

So you need to wait 24 hours atleast to propagate it globally.

    Okay understandable thanks.

But will their posts appear on the forum and be added to the database since they are seeing the site on the old hosts?

They will not be updated on your new host.

You might want to put something like "Under Maintenance' at your old host.

Post and DB will be updated for those members who are seeing the site on the new server.

If you want to speed up propagation, edit the dns zone on the old server and point the A records to the new IP address.

Update your script on the old server so that it points to the *new* DB server IP address. This way people can hit any server but all will see and post data to the new server.

Nope they won't. When I move a forum. I put up an announcement a few days ahead of time and state that the board will be put offline for a server move.

I leave the forum off on the old server and have the forum open on the new server.

So I know that if they are posting to the forum, then the post are going on the new server and not the old.

It is always better to change the A records at the old dns servers along with the name server change. As the DNS records propagate at the higher speed than the NS.

Also, before migrating any site to the new server, your old server should say the site under maintenance or anything similar.

Did you put up any notices you would be transfering the data? If they are doing updates while that's going on there might be a chance you might not see it on the new server.

Yes it is a must for you to put up the announcement or may consider to ask them do not post anything till the forum is entirely move so that you wont be facing any inconvenience.

This is what you need(ed) to do in order to keep the database on the new server properly updated regardless of whether a visitor is sent to your new IP or your old IP.

All appears to be well now. I haven't heard of anymore issues as of yet.

Well it is a common thing, and it would be fine within a few days, however it is in your best interest that you should also contact the customer support in order to overcome this issue at the earliest. And yes definitely your database would end up in the right place, so you don't need to worry about that in any way!

    Huh?

This was a simple propagation issue. Customer support can't do anything about this.
The proper procedure to to turn off the old forum, then migrate.
Anybody still seeing the old server is greeted by an error message to check back tomorrow.

I'd advise to disable site on old host with explanation.

That's not the best way to do it though.

As I mentioned earlier, by far the best way to do it is change the database IP address on the old site to point to the new DB server. This means anyone hitting either site gets to still see the forums and everything goes into the new DB.

I have done this many times and it is by far the easiest and most convenient for everyone.

Why stop people/spiders hitting the site when you don't have to?

Exactly. I have done this many times, and it works perfectly. No downtime at all regardless of whether visitors are hitting the old IP or the new IP.

I'll keep that in mind. And when I have to move my forum. I'll try this method.

Wait how do you do this?

I simply just switch nameservers and waited for propogation. How do you do this the way you are saying?

On the old server, go into your config file and change the database server so it points to the new DB server.

Basically, you are telling both scripts to use the same database server. Either front end site can be used but both would update the same database.

and after I do it this way, I'd still go into domain registrar and change nameservers?

Yes, you would still need to update the nameservers if you would like your website to point to the new host.

Yes, you change the IP and then make sure it's all working, then change the nameservers over.

Doing it this way means the only downtime anyone faces is the initial period while you copy the database over to the new server and update the server IPs. With a smallish database you would only have a few minutes of downtime.

After that it doesn't matter how long it takes to propagate, people can hit either server and everyone sees the same thing.
