    Help with home router cisco/juniper/fortinet

I am looking for home router that will have WIFI capabilities that can provide Layer 3 routing. Again it must have WIFI because this will be used for home but i want all the features of strong router as well.

Cisco or Juniper or Fortinet will be fine.

I currently use Netgear N600 WNDR3400 which freaking sucks

    Thanks

Is there any reason you can't separate out the equipment a bit? I personally run a few virtualized Vyattas, a Cisco switch, and two UniFi access points at home. It's a bit more hardware to maintain, but the flexibility is absolutely worth it. I also really don't think you're going to find any hardware that has the business/enterprise level features and an access point built in.

Separate out the equipment as in how?

I have the Netgear Router that cannot do VLAN so i can't do much from starting point. I do have cisco SG300-10 layer 3 switch but it is like useless since the main router cannot do VLAN.

Also i am trying to setip IPSec VPN to VPN between 2 remote locations so need 2 routers and need a router that will be for home used with wifi features and be layer 3

Every router does some sort layer 3, NATting is a little hard to do without that.

You don't qualify as a 'router' if you don't have layer 3 capabilities, because as it stands, 3 is the routing layer.

Juniper's actual routers don't offer WiFi, you'll have to add in a Unifi AP or something for that part.

But separation is usually a good thing anyway.

Separation as in what though? Don't get what you mean by separation there

So do you think i dont need to get the router? How else will i be able to do VLAN from the netgear router and do IPSec VPN to VPN between 2 remote locations?

What we're saying is don't look for all of that in one device - you're not going to find one that does it all. Do it like you'd do a normal business network. Get a managed switch with VLAN capabilities, get an actual router (could just be a computer with a few NICs running Vyatta - personally I use a virtualization host and do 802.1q from a trunk port on my switch to the virtualization host's NIC and have my Vyatta boxes running there doing my routing, but if you don't do 802.1q you'd just physically cable the different ports to ports corresponding to different VLANs) and get an access point such as a UniFi. It'll be a bit more setup, but it'll afford you a lot of flexibility. 802.1q will make managing segmentation much easier, and the UniFi access points support 802.1q so it'll be trivial for you to have a truly isolated guest network, too.

For home I used a Ubuiquity Edge router lite (vyatte basically) and a couple UnifiAP.

    http://www.ubnt.com/edgemax
    http://www.ubnt.com/unifi

about $200 for one of each.

Haven't used their Edge router, but if UniFi's anything to go by it'll be a good choice. They've got great user interfaces!

I think i will get the fortiwifi 60D
I already have a Cisco SG300-10 at home...just need a capable router at the root that will provide the VLAN i need and also have a wifi needed for home use. I do not need unifi as i am not living in a villa..its a small house

Would have loved cisco but they dont make anything like that

    1) Assuming your WNDR3400 is revision 1, just change out the firmware to OpenWRT, DD-WRT, or Tomato. You can run wifi, vlans, and vpn altogether.

    2) Get an Alix with a WiFi card, and run OpenBSD, Linux, or Vyatta.
ASTUTE INTERNET: Advanced, customized, and scalable solutions with AS54527 Premium Performance and Canadian Optimized Network (Level3, Shaw, CogecoPeer1, GTT/Tinet),

How do i know it is revision 1?
Is this hardware wise or software wise?

    Hardware Version WNDR3400 CVNA
    Firmware Version V1.0.0.46_16.0.57

Hardware revision; what you need to determine is if the hardware is supported by the *WRT firmware. It will usually say on a sticker somewhere what the hardware revision is, along with the serial number and model number. Revision 2 will eventually be supported as well, but it's currently listed as a work in progress.

I use a Cisco Rv220w plus a Cisco Sg 200-26 switch and it works perfectly fine. I'm pretty sure that you can manage your vlans with your Sg 300-10 because its a layer 3 switch so it can do the routing for you.

We're often using routers from Ubiquiti or Mikrotik for home or office usage. Gives many more options than those cheap Dlink or others.

Need VPN into the DC? Let it handle this device. Need Vlans? No problem.

Nice, just picked up the edgemax lite for a simple p2p vpn, looks like a nice little compact device with great specs. Not bad for $99.

Can you guys help me out here
I just picked up the BUFFALO AirStation AC 1750 Gigabit Dual Band Open Source DD-WRT Wireless Router http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I2N6O0W

The question i have here is this. I want to be able to test and play with several open source routers like vyos, pfsense, m0n0wall and others and have them under VLANs so they can be DHPC servers for their VLANs

I currently have the Netgear WNDR3400 as the main router, do i need to just replace the Netgear router with this new buffalo router or can i connect the buffalo router to the netgear router and be able to setup VLANs and achieve my plan from the buffalo?

Please help...about to set it up now
    Thanks!!!

At home, i am using the Fortinet 60D (non wifi model) with Unifi AP's.

I am a hardcore network guy and find Mikrotik's to be a cheap solution. I have yet to try EdgeMax, although it is on my list.

Replace the WNDR3400 with the buffalo.

Vlan off port 3 to a vlan, create a static route for this routers uplink (if you want your open source stuff to be able to reach the outside world)

vlan off port 4 to a vlan, same thing.

You should then have wifi+ port 1/2 for your home/office and ports 3 and 4 as vlan networks.

I did this with an older WNDR once, vlan's in DD-WRT can be quite a pain.

    Similar setup
You know if the Buffalo DD-WRT router allows IPSec site-to-site VPN?
