VDSL.. Anyone thinking what i'm thinking?
http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/vdsl.htm
Does anyone have this yet? I know its being used in larger urban centeres but not where I live.
can you say 52Mbit download 16Mbit upload?
Datacenters as we know them will be out of business. 1000MB unmetered port on oc192 will be the the standard just to keep upLast edited by ITHost-KoreyR; 05-30-2006 at 03:53 PM.

I'm still waiting for FIO from verizon to come my area, but I think the late for me is going to be a long one but that looks like an alternative if a company can offer it up for me.

Not all the 52Mbit will be available for the internet. Infact, I'm sure the telcos will use ~25Mbit for IPTV.
Also, to receive the 52Mbit, you'd have to be within like 30,000 feet from the nearest CO/DSLAM.Can you be scared half to death twice?

I have a 20Mbit (download) line here at the moment from my cable company (Telenet) & I'm getting decent speeds at it. There are however sometimes serious problems with connection failure, but that's my providers problem, not mine.
About the VDSL speeds, all nice & stuff but you must also keep distances in mind. The FULL speed is probably only available for people living very close to the source, for a longer distance I think you will certainly have a less amount of bandwidth to use then one who lives closer.

Think of sweden - 100mbit both ways is not uncommon over there - infact iirc even some of the distant villages have these speeds to the home!
mad - but nice for us geeks!

Switzerland provider Swisscom/Bluewin is planning to install VDSL in biggest swiss cities during this year (probably the end of the year). This is the first time they change their infrastructure in over 2 years. For info, the biggest home line we can get in Switzerland at the moment, is 2 Mbps at the price of 90$/month... So expensive ! I am just glad VDSL is coming.

Need to step up :-(

The contention will be so insane you'll hardly be able to push it at all.
In the UK we're in the process of rolling out 8mbit to our DSL end users, and are hearing that other providers are having major contention issues because of the pure massive amount of bandwidth they're putting at the fingertips of end users. Though we haven't seen too many problems yet I imagine it will begin to hit us eventually (being an unmetered DSL provider doesn't help too much either!).

Korea, Hong Kong, Japan, and even Sweden have 100mbit connections for under $50 a month US.
