Bloated Joomla Site - Dedicated vs VPS
Hello WebHostingTalk community! This is my first post ~ happy to be here. I have read all the threads here that are similar to what I'm asking but felt compelled to start a specific thread.
My site (thumdar.com) is built with Joomla 1.5 and uses a very large amount of components, modules, plugins, java-scripts and just about everything else. I need my forums to be VERY snappy and fast. I am also planning on offering a robust multi-chat system for my users. Daily averages are 1500 visitor and 25,000 pages. Bandwidth per month is about 1.5gb but very shortly that should at least double (if not triple).
Currently I am using Hostgator shared and it performs okay but I am forced to minimize everything as much as possible.
I have been given a great offer to receive web hosting financial support from a business associate to help optimize page load times. Initially I was planning on using Hostgator's level 4 VPS hsoting but have become aware of InterServer.net's dedicated hosting for about the same price.
Joomla is a memory hog and the dedicated server offers more RAM, storage and bandwidth. Reviews on InterServer have been excellent (and I have a personal friend with very high level experience who suggested I consider them after his very satisfied personal experience).
So ~ what do you geeks say? InterServer Dedicated or Hostgator VPS? I am strongly leaning toward InterServer. Oh, and also, I'm a total newbie on both dedicated and cloud servers. Any thoughts on advantages or suggestions would be appreciated.Last edited by JSYMedia; 09-03-2011 at 12:33 AM.

If all is fine with both the VPS and the dedicated server then it really doesn't matter. The advantage you get with the dedicated server is that you don't run the chance of sharing the VPS machine with a bad citizen renting a VPS on the same node.
I suppose that if you're getting similar metrics for the same price, you're better off with the dedicated account. The purpose of looking for a VPS is to save money, so if it the dedicated server is about the same price there's no point in sharing resources. Perhaps the VPS is over-priced?Last edited by ajonate; 09-03-2011 at 01:10 AM.

That's a lot of money for a VPS, even with cPanel. If I were you I would look for another VPS host with more reasonable fees. There is a thread going in the VPS forum about a listing at lowendbox.com by ChicagoVPS that you might take a look at. I don't know anything about ChicagoVPS, but there is a great deal of discussion below the offering that you might review.
http://www.lowendbox.com/blog/chicag...ps-in-chicago/
- 2048MB memory
- 50GB storage
- 2000GB/month data transfer
- OpenVZ/SolusVM
- $7/month with coupon code 2048
Also, from what you have said about your needs I'm wondering why you need cPanel. It sounds like Kloxo would meet your needs and save you perhaps $15/month. For your needs I would use Kloxo.

I'm not familiar with FLoxo and was considering cPanel due to my familiarity with it. I'll have to look into that. Also, I want to work with a company that has an excellent track record and am not going to risk working with a super budget hosting solution.
I'm still leaning towards the dedicated. Why share?

Good to know. Can I just install Kloxo in my dedicated server?

Sure, just disable selinux first. Here's a detailed guide.
http://entomy.com/VPS-Server-Configuration-Guide.pdf
Don't try it with CentOS 5 64-bit or CentOS 6. You'll need to use CentOS 5 32-bit. Install Kloxo before applying updates, as indicated in the guide.

Well.., I went with the dedicated server and I am very disappointed at the websites performance. The truth is ~ I see NO performance enhancement! None. The page load times are almost exactly the same. How can this be?!
From a Hostgator entry level shared host to a dedicated host with:
Dual core Atom CPU Speed: 1.6GHz
100Mb Uplink Port
2GB Memory
CentOS
WHM cPanel
I'm shocked. It looks like I'm going to have to rebuild my Joomla site. The only thing I can conclude at this point is that the site is just not built efficiently enough.

I've had over 100 Joomla sites running on FutureHosting and KnownHost VPS's with no issue whatsoever.
There has to be something wrong with your installation somehow.
What version are you using and what additional components have you added? Are you running anything in legacy mode?

Just now optimized the mysql database and I see no change in page load times.
Caching IS enabled.
I am a total newbie with managing my own private servers and don't know what nginx, varnish or CDN are.
The server is not loaded. It's very light, actually. Thank you.

Nothing running in legacy mode.
Joomla 1.5.20
RUNNING:
Account Expiration Control
AlphaContent
AlphaUserPoints (considering deleting)
Art of User (considering deleting)
Community Answers
Akkeba
JomSocial 2.2.2
Kunena
DocMan
EasyBlog
Gantry with RocketTheme template (I suspect this is an issue)
JCE editor
JComments
JoomlaXi JomSocail Profile Types
My RSS Reader
ninjaXplorer
Redirect (hmm...)
Xmap
So you can see, it's bloated.

Install Cloudflare's service and enable rocketloader and minifier through the Cloudflare control panel. you have an awful lot of unaggregated css / js files you need to load in asynchronous, which will absolutely speed up your website.
Cloudflare is free, btw. Check it out: www.cloudflare.com

Check out Secured Servers.
G6950 Dual Core
4GB DDR3 RAM
2 X 250 SATA RAID 1
3200GB 100 Port Transfer
cPanel/WHM
$106
$20 more gets you a quad core X3430
Should meet your needs nicely. With WHM and a little study, you can manage the server yourself.Hosting is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get.

the mysql database is just a part of the issue
what about the mysql configuration
on Centos
vi /etc/my.cnf
in cpanel
my.domain:2086 (login with your root details)
go to Software>easy apache
and re-compile apache enabling memcache and disk cache
there's also a php pre-load/compile module
that with cloudflare's CDN (as already mentioned)
will not only reduce server load
but will also serve pages rapidly (cloudflare's cdn has a number of edge locations which your sites pages are cached at)

Xmap is the first thing I'd be looking at there.....and I can't say I've ever been impressed with Kunena either.
As for Gantry/RocketTheme....never used their stuff so I couldn't say.
JomSocial does slow it down for sure, but I don't think deleting Art of User will make any difference as it's just a better interface for the membership process.
One thing to check....look at your database tables and make sure the jos_bannertrack table hasn't gone ballistic and grown to a huge size. I've seen that happen a few times.

The cpu type is very weak. The single core version offers around 300 passmarks, so the ressources you have available are around 600 passmarks, which is equal to or less than the amount of cpu allocation you'll get with most shared hosting accounts.
With a heavy, ressource hungry Joomla setup you need more cpu processing power and probably more ram too.
Caching is also worth looking into. Both webserver end (e.g. Varnish) and php end (e.g. APC).
