2.5 15K SAS hard drives reliability
We've had some reliability problems with Dell 146GB 2.5in 15K SAS drives, and I'm wondering if this is abnormal or if we should consider another brand or even drive type (if there are better options).
We brought 24 new drives of this type online in Jan 2010 and in 1 year and 2 months we've had 6 of them fail.

Sounds like a flaky raid controller or bad backplane.
We have hundreds of the 15k 146gb 2.5" dell/gates in R610s production with a failure rate of 1% or less.'Ripcord'ing is the only way!

No, Toshiba/Fujitsu, product no: MBE2147RC
Are the Seagate's better?
Hmm, those are the same servers we have. They are setup with PERC 6/i controller in a RAID 10.
What would be the best way to verify correct operation of the controller?
I somewhat doubt it is the backplane since the failures have occurred in 4 separate servers.

I think this might be part of the issue.
On several servers the RAID array reports being in a degraded state, possibly due to outdated firmware.
State : Degraded
Firmware Version : 6.2.0-0013
Minimum Required Firmware Version : 6.3.0-0001
Also though, I noticed that we have some Seagate 15K SAS drives in two of our other servers (that also report old firmware) but they have lasted for 5 years so far. Maybe we will go with the Seagates in the future.Last edited by paladinstrike; 03-15-2011 at 12:16 PM.

Yeah start flashing those firmwares and getting the state to optimal, I would say that's part of the problem.
'Ripcord'ing is the only way!
