Pair Networks? Anyone used them?

I am firing Jumpline.com. I need to find some place that has relatively cheap hosting, supports resellers, and is reliable. I was referred to Pair Networks (pair.com). Does anyone have any feedback about them?? Any other hosting services to recommend? Any input would be great! Oh, by the way, I would avoid Jumpline like the plague.

I have not used Pair, but I can tell you that they have a stellar reputation. They are also one of the most established hosting companies on Internet.

Pair is good, if you don't need a feature-rich plan. Their network is reliable, their servers are well built and maintained -- I'd estimate their uptime average at around 99.99% -- and they pay good attention to security.

The only major problem I see with them is the feature sets on their plans: If you want, for example, the ability to run custom cgi scripts, you have to sign up for a $30/month plan. While this made sense at one point -- five years ago, cgi hosting was not all that common, and almost every web host differentiated their plans this way -- it is quite a contrast compared to most hosts today.

But basically I'd say that if the feature set is sufficient and the price is within your budget, you'll have trouble finding a better host -- in a sense, I'd say that Pair is to virtual hosting what Rackspace is to dedicated hosting.

pair and the gobc

Pair is part of the GOBC, good old boys club pairs been around for ever, they dont have the cheapest plans around but have knowledgable staff, great backbone, etc.. they were one of the first players. You really cant go wrong.

I signed up to have a web site hosted with Pair back in 98, and the only reason I cancelled was because I now run my own hosting company.

Service and support are truly remarkable at Pair. And while I'm not quite sure about 99.99% uptime, it's certainly over 99.9% anyday. When a hard disk crashes, they have backups... Not like some other hosts, which claim to make backups, but then when something happens they don't actually exist.

Pair is hands down the best host out there, except for the fact that they're a little expensive. However, I find that for what they provide, the price is just fine. I use them to run several domains off of one account and their management interface is truly incredible (and entirely custom-made). Setting up email accounts, new domains, chron jobs, etc., is incredibly easy. Oh, also another HUGE benefit is that their MySQL setups can be done through their Web interface (i.e., you can CREATE new databases for yourself and CHANGE MySQL passwords through their interface, unlike with phpMyAdmin or emailing some support goof like most of the places around here seem to feature). Unfortunately, their MySQL databases cannot be used for any script that has a "counting" feature and thus most CMS and BBS systems are not allowed.

This last reason is why I'm trying to find something to use in conjunction with Pair, but I would never leave them all together. Oh, there is also an incredibly responsive and helpful Usenet support server that they run -- totally awesome way of getting help with anything you could possibly need, which is in addition to phone/email support directly from Pair (which I have never, in 5 years, needed to access).

Miguel
