    cage space

I'm just curious as to what providers are charging for cage space per square foot. Do you charge anything for the space? Do you just charge for the power or bandwidth?

Almost every cage I have seen charge per square ft... then depending on the DC it's either bring your own and pay cross connect fees or they will run a drop for you and you use their bandwidth.. and then power as well.

If you're looking for specifics, the price per square foot will vary a lot from market to market and even within segments of the market (i.e. subburbs vs downtown.) Looking for anywhere in particular?

yes, the price range is all over the place. depends on location, connectivity, security, SAS-70 certification, etc. do you have a specific market and product range you had in mind?

About 50% of our customers don't actually pay for space, they simply do not care about it and like to be quoted in an all in $ per KW installed.

We've been seeing this much more commonly as well. I'd say ~50% of our larger (30kw+) colo deals now are priced on power alone.

Well, not directly. It's generally built into the per KW cost. I'm sure it's not that they "don't care", they simply determine their costs on a per KW basis. That's pretty common on wholespace.

kW is becoming the new norm, not sq ft

I really like the $/kW method, so much simpler and cleaner, especially now a days when its all about power.
For smaller deals like single cabs though its easier to just quote circuits.

So what kind of pricing are you quoting per kW?

Muhhahha ... we recently got a quote from someone for 150kW of power in conditioned space, and I thought that it was actually inclusive of utility costs as well. Nope, wrong, this place wanted to charge $200/KW/mo for infrastructure allocation, utility costs on top of this.

If the power was passthru at say $0.10/kwh, then you would be looking at $272/KW... which isn't bad (if my math and conversions were done correctly) at all.

They wanted to charge us a per circuit price for power, which was actually pretty reasonable, but I sure to have an issue with pay for a utility charge on a power circuit, when that power may be partially used, not in use at all (future growth), etc ... kind of an odd mix of models -- basically still charging on a per circuit basis for power at the end of the day.

Yeah, the base rate wasn't't terrible. That seems to be the going rate for space here in downtown Chicago. Regarding the power billing, some states do have interesting laws regarding selling metered power. Otherwise, maybe just offer to pay the price for a meter install, that may be the issue as well.

Just to further reiterate on the point of pricing per KW for the OP, many companies will determine not only the base rent of the cage itself, but how many SF you get by the amount of power you are committing to. For example, if you commit to 50KW, the facility may want a minimum of 150 watts per square foot. This means they will provide you with a cage that is roughly 333 square feet. If they lease this space to you at $125 per KW, the base rent on your cage would be around $6,250 per month, and THEN you would have either costs per power circuit or submetered usage for the power.

While this is certainly the new method of pricing cage space (not really that new, but being more widely adopted), there are certainly still providers out there that offer a price per SF and then charge for power. The KW method allows a data center operator to get complete ROI for all of the facilities resources, because more often than not, a data center will run out of power then it will raised floor.

What location are you looking at ?

In Utah you can find 100 Sq' for around $1500 - $2000 / month plus power. The average 120/20 amp 225-250 for A + B leg. With free cross connects to providers such as Level3, Global Crossing, Cogent, XO, and some other local BGP mixed providers.

To OP - prices start probably from $12 per sq ft for lower end data centers ( no raised floor, water based fire systems, etc.) up to $30 for FM200, raised floor, Tier 1 bandwidth providers, N+1 (at least) infrastructure.
Power - $10 to $20 per AMP /110V - again - some will try to sell to you for $10 per AMP non UPSed and non GENed power.
