    Process for filing for ownership?

    Hey all,

What is the process for filing for domain ownership if A registrar (small hosting company) disappears?

Is it through ICANN or is it through the company like Tucows or Melbourne IT?

Links for getting this done in an expedient manner would be helpful.

    Thanks

You can't take ownership of a domain unless the owner of the domain sells it to you.

It does not matter if they "abandoned" it, you will have to wait until the name expires in that case.

    Perhaps I didn't explain myself.

If a hosting company goes under and has domains they are the "Registrar" for. So someone loses their website and their domain name that they paid for. what is the process they have to go through to gain control of the domain that they paid for?

    Thanks

A "small hosting company" is most likely not a Registrar but is a reseller for a Registrar. In that case you'd have to contact the Registrar - be it Tucows, Melbourne IT, Enom or whoever...

At the time registration, ensure that the web hosting company registers the domain in your name to avoid any problems in future.

Yes, this is very important, yet overlooked by many online business owners that allow their hosting provider to set up the hosting + domain.
If the domain name is, at the very least, using your email as one of the contacts, then you should be able to make changes to WHOIS ownership info easily.

We could probably help you (in a more expedient manner) if you provided more details. Members have given you generic answers to a generic situation. If you sort it out from that, all's well. But if you need specific instructions, you'll need to supply specific details.

In the event that a Registrar goes bust ICANN will move the domains to another Registrar. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/05...erfly_godaddy/

This is a very rare event.

I could tell you a joke about UDP. But I'm not sure you would get it!

    Hey musicman123,

Were you the original registrant of the domain name in question? Can you provide the domain name in this thread?

As others have said, the most likely scenario is this hosting company was a reseller for domains. In that situation, many registrars have ways of protecting domain registration, even if the domain reseller's account expires.

It is best to start with the whois result and find out who the registration company is. Go to them first and find out what their policy is for ownership as most likely the smaller company that went out of business used a larger company to register through.
