Colocation in London or the midlands. Any good datacenter out there?
Hi, I'm pretty new to this. I'm looking to put my server in a datacenter. Its my first server and one of many hopefully as i want to start a webhosting business. Any suggestions?

What would you be using your server for? What are your power and bandwidth requirements?

Oooops i forgot that... i've got a 1u server and want to get the most out of it. 1U seems to be the cheapest option out there.
Ideally i want a 100mb uplink. And a decent WAN connection a few MegaBYTES would be great. I'll be using it to host multiple websites.
As for power requirements I want to fit 2 Quad Cores and around 8gb of ram with 4x1TB hard drives in RAID 5. As i said i want to get the most of of it as i want to run a lot of VPSs

Hey,
Check out PoundHost for Co-location of if you need 1/4, 1/2 or even a full cab then there's always Blue Square direct
RapidSwitch is also very good!
Good luck with the search!

I personally would recommend RackSrv for the brilliant service I've had from them with dedicated servers (haven't tried colo with them mind you). They are a bit outside of London though, in Kent.
PoundHost again have been brilliant for me with dedicated servers - haven't tried colo though. They are in the BlueSquare group so practically own their own facilities.
For the best value in one package for single server colo - I'd go with RapidSwitch, they provide your service with a lot of "extras".

What do you mean by "extras"?

Sorry my posts are often lazy. I mean that they provide a value added service, a lot of extra value for your money with things like alerts, free kvmoverip etc if I remember rightly.
I would certainly give RackSrv a go if Kent is ok though. Speak to Jon and you'll surely have a great pre-sales experience.

Hi there,
It depends where you are based as to where works best for you, but you will see a huge variation in price between Docklands and other locations for obvious reasons.
In the Midlands / North Node4 have a few data centres now, and further South Gyron's new Centro facility looks pretty good.
Also it's not really related to what you asked but you might want to rethink your plan to run SATA drives in RAID 5 for VPS hosting - the performance might not be as good as you are expecting. I would consider RAID 10 for only 4 drives, as with RAID 5 / 6 you need a lot more spindles to get high performance. You might be OK with RAID 5 if you use faster SAS disks.
Finally be careful with your CPU specification - dual quad-cores could use a huge amount of power if you pick the wrong ones.

I think i'm gonna opt for raid 10. Do you have any experience with node4? As for the quad cores i'll probably settle for low power ones

There is one that I was looking at a little while ago, COREIX, they are based in Stratford behind the High Street a few minutes walk from the NR and Underground station. I never visited them but they are listed as Stratford village which is an office complex opposite the shopping centre. If it helps to have access to your server and you are close by then for peace of mind I guess that will do but they are not great on prices. Poundhost certainly gives more bandwidth but they are based in Maidenhead and Milton Keynes.
