Everyone thinks it's the end of the world, and others say no its not and nothing will happen on that date. I'm partially of the second group, but have also been into prophecy all my life. It's not the end of the world, just a time of massive change. How that affects civilization, I've no clue. Think about it... all it takes is one small but well placed asteroid to set off a chain of events. Consider this, what happens if that asteroid hits Old Faithful? You will have a massive chain of events that over a few years will wipe out most life on earth, and man's history will be forever buried and preserved in the left over ashes that settles when it's all over.
As for the movie, I think the graphics will be stunningly awesome, but the storyline and acting may be quite lacking. One of them always is because the budget has to be taken away from one of those to pay for the graphics.

Quite frankly I'd be more interested in seeing if Aussie Bob's solar powered bike is still running in 3 years rather than worrying about the end of the world.
People need to enjoy life more rather than worrying too much about a date.
I mean, how many times has the world supposed to have been ended now.? And funnily enough, we're all still here.

The world has ended you just don't remember, your dreaming all of this up.
I dont think anything will hapen. they said this in 2002? not sure the correct date and they said this about the 90's. Im sure if there are enough people thinking something will happen it may hurt the economy a bit but nothing major.Leader of the new anti sig spamming club.

All the antiprophesers (just made that one up lol) are missing some very important points. For one, modern science has yet to prove the Mayans wrong. As a matter of fact, the Mayans proved modern science wrong, and modern science had to concede to it. One of those is the fact of more planets further out that revolve around the sun. There is at least one planet and several stars that the Mayans knew and wrote about, which modern science only recently discovered. Given that the Mayans have yet to be proven wrong..... I dont think I would be disregarding their texts and calendars at this point, science certainly doesnt. Many scientists are looking at stars on their calendars that we havent yet discovered, and saying "Ok, lets go rediscover those stars and get famous".
That being said, I believe prophecy can change. Why do we still have a stockpile of missiles pointed at Russia when we are over due for another asteroid? For far less than we have spent in Iraq, we could have invented better green energy, and a way to knudge asteroids out of the direct path of our planet. We dont take warnings serious until the threat is real (ahem 9/11 anyone?) but by the time we know an asteroid is on collision course with us, it will be too late to DEVELOP anything.
We are overdue for another major asteroid, we are overdue for a major earthquake, we are overdue for a major super volcano.... science constantly says it. Is it too much to consider that 2012 just might be the date for one of those that changes everything about our civilation? Naw... lets stay blinded and let it surprise us. I'd rather our government concentrate on preparation for this sort of stuff, stock up nonperishable supplies, etc, etc, build anti-asteroid technologies, etc. We cant do anything about earthquakes and volcanoes..... but an asteroid can cause those as secondary actions.... and we have the smarts and technology to build something that can at least try to keep them from hitting us.
The mayans could be wrong, although they have been right every time so far.... but no matter what, we know we're overdue for some kind of major event. We should be working on preparing what we can.
On another note.... it's not the mayans, but some other ancient text.... that says their is an earth-like planet with life revolving our same orbit opposite the sun from us. That would be a cool find.... well, according to the texts, we DONT want to meet them...Last edited by Webdude; 08-04-2009 at 04:30 PM.
