If a self-driving car gets pulled over, should Google have to pay the fine?
On a drive in a convoy of Google's autonomous vehicles last week, a difficult driving situation arose.

The person in control of the vehicle should be the one getting the fine.
A drunk man gets in and passes out and turns the wheel by falling on it and crashes (in the future when they will/might be public) Google isn't liable in my eyes.★ Sapatana.eu ILoveBilling

This is definitely a valid question.
I can see the
but I set the speed at 35 mph officer! It must be an issue with Google's system if you clocked me doing 45!SimpleSonic - We Make Fast... Easy!

If I buy a GoogleCar, they should take the blame, Unless there's a override function for manual control, then they should get what lorry drivers have Tachograph installed like a black box.
When you select manual control it's marked and when you go back into selfdrive, then it's marked again. That way cops can check and go right you was going over the limit, you get the fine.
If it's not your fault, then Google gets the fine. I think that's fair and clever .

Hmmmmm.
In a Transformers episode (G1, 1986) Bumblebee was driving and Spike was chilling. A cop pulled them over. Spike told the officer he wasn't driving. Bumblebee transformed to prove he was an Autobot and that he was driving. The cop said that Autobot have to follow the rules too.
Therefore Google would be fined
I wonder how this would play out in Knight Rider (original K.I.T.T.), iRobot and Demolition Man.

If the google car is pulled over, the cop's the segfault.

I imagine while in self driving mode the driver will not be able to manually turn the wheel without turning the system off. Any car issues or braking issues would probably be up to the owner.
Only thing I would see Google being liable for is software bugs. Would certainly like to see self-driving cars actually used though. Fewer drunk driving incidents, fewer traffic issues, and cheaper insurance is what I see if Google actually gets this to become a standard feature.

That's when Google starts fixing the bugs!
Needless to say self-driving cars should be tested very intensively before making them available for general public. If you steal from one author, it’s plagiarism; if you steal from many, it’s research

Although the car is self driving, there is still controls. So i believe the person who is in the drivers seat should get fined.

Legally, it will be the operator of the car. He or she is sitting behind the wheel (at this point and in the foreseeable future).
It is the operators responsibility to take control of the car if the car is not responding correctly.
Unless you can prove that you could not take control of the vehicle and google took over your driving (maybe an advertisement popped up on the windshield in front of you and got stuck).Windows 10 to Linux and Mac OSX: I'm PARSECs better than you. Eat my dust!!!

I somehow think it would encourage more people to drive drunk. Why not since technically they're not driving...which leads to....
If the driver is drunk and relied on the car to take over....?!?!?
See a nice little cash grab there.....pop-up blocker option for an extra $1500...unless of course common sense sets in and pop-ups are not a part of it.
Imagine the ads while driving, especially if it analyzes the car;
- need gas...local gas station pop-up
- tires worn...tire shop pop-up
- season change....maintenance pop-up....tire change pop-up
- smelly or dirty car....car wash pop-up
.....and don't ever mentioned that you're hungry in the car....food pop-ups forever.

I'm personally in favor of a ticket going to the person "driving" the vehicle, e.g. the person who has the override controls.
I may be in the minority there with that view, but I think that whoever has access to the override controls should be able to step in and slow the vehicle down if it exceeds the posted speed limit for whatever reason.
Now, car accidents are a whole other question... And I'm not sure what the answer there is!

I hope you are not serious... but, that would be drunk driving on top of speeding. Really... unless there is something mechanically wrong with the vehicle, the driver is responsible.
But if you are doing 45 in a 35, no matter the mechanical condition of the car, you are responsible... unless you can't disengage the car from driving. The driver has a responsibility to pay attention to the rules of the road.

I am not disagreeing, and yes the driver is still responsible. A vehicle is 2000lbs+ moving weapon...so leaving it to Google?!?!?!?
But look at it this way;
Person goes out, get a few drinks...cool.
Smart person...goes with a sober friend...end of the night, everyone goes home safe...maybe even a taxi.
"Smarter" person....goes out with friends...gets drunk...decides to drive home since "the car" is doing the driving. What if a child, animal, or obstacle jumps in the road? I know Google will have this covered (reminds me of the Knight Rider movie around 1999 or 2000)...but you see what I'm saying.
The driver IS still responsible, but in their drunken state, how responsible are they? Especially now when intelligence is much lower, people will use "the car" as excuse.
Which also include another thought. Bars or venues are now charged for letting people go home too drunk. How does Google handle such situations. A drunk govern system. Perhaps a built it breathalyzer. If it detects alchol, complete shutdown. Hmmm
It's also bad enough that people can't drive properly....so think of a moment when the driver needs to do some form of manual override. The car did all the driving....now their confused making them more dangerous.
Fast food is the same thing. Years ago, things were done manual, less errors and common sense would help them "cook" the food. Now, everything is at a push of a button, and I'm surprised they make any profits with the amount of errors that occur. That along with the whatever is in the food has caused their profits to drop.
DJ's same thing. Years ago a DJ had to learn to dj from practice and buying records or cd's. Now, a couple mp3's and ipods...instant dj. Not the same. There are tools for dj's like Serato...excellent tool...but it's a tool to a skill...not something to buy and become an overnight dj. A google car will not make people overnight drivers.
Sorry...a bit my usual side track rant Google car...great....in the right hands.Last edited by WPCYCLE; 05-26-2014 at 04:47 PM.

I guess you are saying the "smarter" person is drunk? Guess I got that out of that entire thing.
If that is the case, the person is charged with drunk driving. The car is not responsible. Google should not be held accountable. If that were the case, pilots could fly drunk all the time.
Although, you do have a point... we will need legal precedence here... some lawyer will add Google to the list being sued since google has "deep pockets".
And of course, I'm saying what will happen... I don't know for sure... the courts will decide/the people will ultimately decide. I can't imagine google or other car makers would be held responsible unless there is a mechanical malfunction.
The accident with Paul Walker, the parties went on to sue Porsche (the last I read)... even though it was considered a high speed accident not a mechanical accident. So, it may depend... we are a highly litigious country (right or wrong).
Good post by you... thoughtful...
