Doesnt Dell use their own proprietary motherboards in their servers?

Whereas Supermicro is just the case really? You can use other motherboards?

    Unless I'm understanding this wrong.

I bought some servers (supermicro, or so I'm told) and they came with standard Tyan server mainboards, and one had an MSI. Unless its just a supermicro chassis.

I remember reading somewhere that Supermicro supplies OEM motherboards and cases to Dell and other companies. I can't find the link.

If you bought a supermicro server and it came with Tyan motherboard then you didn't get a Supermicro barebones server.

    in order:

no, i dont drive a honda. i drive muscle and i love it (i owned beamers previously). i will buy into the car metaphor when bmw starts buying volkswagens and rebranding them as beamers. if you really want to go for it, dell is the acura - competing on price. rackshack anyone?

dell is supermicro's oem partner. that means dell buys motherboards from supermicro. so if you go by the 'go straight to the source' principle, supermicro is the way to go.

supermicro manufactures both motherboards and chassis. dell 'makes' chassis, for what its worth. im not inclined to pay an arm and a leg for a pretty bevel which i dont like anyway. this, however, is a question of taste.

as was mentioned, if you got a server that was advertised as supermicro with a motherboard other than supermicro, you got ripped off. the whole point of getting a supermicro solution is that the chassis is 'integrated' with the motherboard. what this means for you, in simple terms, is that the blowers are aligned with the heatsinks and the whole barebone has been designed and tested for excellent airflow and cooling. you even get supermicro-supplied cpu heatsinks you are supposed to use. whoever uses an msi motherboard in a supermicro chassis (or in a server, really) ought to be drawn and quartered (please dont flame me with 'my $99/mo box runs just fine in a desktop case with an msi')

if you want dell's support (for what its worth - ive seen dell dispatch techs i wouldnt let near my toaster, let alone a server) or for marquee value, thats fine. stop trying to misinform people for self-justification - this forum is about delivering accurate information so the less informed may benefit from the wealth of industry supplied and validated knowledge.

Tyan is also pretty nice. They make barebones servers designed for their mother boards.
