    Client View

    Hi!

So, I ordered a VPS (unmanged with just ssh installed). I'm estatic about it! I did purchase it for my personal sites etc.. My question was about web hosting clients. Most are use to cpanel etc.. But is cpanel and all of those other panels really needed? Could most web hosting clients get away with just ftp and be happy? I myself have already grown to hate cpanel, and if I did get into the web hosting business I would TRY to stay away from it. Any thoughts? Sorry if this all comes jumbled together... It's 2:30 AM here.. VERY tired!

We've got clients who don't have a control panel but you have to remeber that you have to do everything for them. Setup new domains, setup email accounts, add new accounts. Also how do users track their bandwidth / disk usage? Its doable but a control panel does help end users. 99.9% of people wouldn't even know how to SSH into a box let alone do anything on the command line.

One thing I've learnt over time is that whilst it can be cool to do everything via SSH etc sometimes the simplest interface is not the quickest way to get things done. My time is precious and I want to get things done as quick as I can. If I setup a website a control panel take 10 seconds. Via SSH it might take 5-10 minutes, multiple that by a few accounts a day, it soon adds up.

Of course you could look at DA or Plesk which you might prefer (I would guess DA from what it sounds like your techical background is)

Plesk is easier to use and if you're using Virtuozzo it is built to work with it much nicer. It is integrated with the Virtuozzo Powerpanel which is a huge plus. Comparing to Cpanel it is much easier to use from my experiences. DA is good for savvy users. So I agree with a2b2.

I was simply talking about the client needing a panel, not the server admin. I've realized I can do so much more without a panel. In the past I've had problems with CPanel changing the httpd.conf file with some odd VirtualHosts. I guess the automation is alright, but I'd like to it manually via SSH. So, I guess most clients ... PREFER a panel?

I would say most clients prefer a panel, yes.

I would from my own opinion say that even though you may not like cPanel, my clients go nuts over it. Most of my clients are upgradeing from free webhosting with cheesy panels, and they move into cPanel. I could do everything from SSH, but and give my clients ftp access and such, but its quicker for me to add them in cPanel, and be done with it. They prefere haveing the pretty interface and love the addon Fantastico. So its completly up to you, but personally I look and give what the end user wants, after all, they pay bills which keeps me in business.

    Just my pennies worth.

Ya, it's a weird thing. I personally think Plesk is a much superior CP however, there are a still lots of users who think cPanel is "the bomb"

I don't get it. Regardless, control panels are really nice.

I have tried webmin, plesk, and a couple other not so name brand control panels, but the end user seems to like cPanel and preferes to have that. Once I get a server up and secure, and up to date, I dont have too much that I have to mess with in WHM, so it really dont bother me. I have just learned to get use to it.
