    exec bit\permissions\groups changes

    hi,

    i'm running CentOS 4.4 (clone of RHEL4).

what can cause a change of permissions (exec bit) or change of group on files besides chmod\chgrp commands ?

i had a problem of files that their permissions changed somehow, and some lost their exec bit (like su) and some got a different group.
i dont think it was human error because files all over the system changed, but not in any logic way.

for example, some files in /dir/subdir changed group, but other files in same subdir stayed with their original group.
same with exec bit, some files had and lost it, other did not.

did any one had this problem ?
any ideas what the cause could be and how to make sure it won't happen again ?

    thanks
