Hurricane Irene becomes a MONSTER of a Hurricane

    Well,
Its official, the first Hurricane of the Atlantic Season is upon us. Fortunately Miami has been spared but the East Coast of the US needs to start prepping.

48 hours ago, it was dismissed a Strong Tropical Storm/Weak Cat 1 Hurricane, now its expected to hit as a Cat 4. Cat 4 storms are rare, the last one was Charley in 04. Charley hit us (Miami) but came in on the Golf end. It caused a lot of damage.

Irene is expected to impact most of the east US from Florida to Boston/New York. Make sure you are ready with a DR Plan

Why do people live in Earthquake or Hurricane areas? Doesn't it suck rebuilding your house all the time?

Considering I'm still fairly young, and I bought my house at 21, I have yet to have that issue here in Southern California. If anything, it'll get burned down by our firestorms before an earthquake destroys it.

yeah, but if I had to choose between a 5.9 earthquake and a category 4 hurricane, I'd pick the earthquake.

Shoot, we're in the path of it (New Jersey). We'll be hit Sunday. I'm just thankful we have Verizon FiOS (fiber optic service). Shouldn't lost internet access... unless we use power, in which case we'll only have eight hours of power internet access.

If you dont live in the US by an area that is impacted by either hurricanes or earthquakes...I would think that would put you in the middle of the country where you might be more prone to tornadoes no?? Ill take a hurricane over a tornado any time as I have been through a few and havent had to rebuild my home *knock on wood*

Irene isn't making landfall in Florida so no need to worry about us

Best of luck to the rest of the East Coast though!!

I've lived in South Florida in the direct path of many hurricanes for the past 22 years.

Simply put, most of them are like big thunderstorms. The really big ones die off really quickly once they hit land so their ability to really damage anything too severely is limited. Sure, there are exceptions, but it's rare.

Also, even if it did hit land here in FL, HostDime would be fine -- they're pretty inland. By the time a Cat 4 hit HostDimes facility, I'd be down to a Cat 2 by the time it reached their datacenter most likely.

    Hey,

I heard it will reach North Carolina in less than 36 hours. We have some servers at Netriplex. Should we be worried?

Netriplex is 300+ miles inland, and way uphill from any water. Should be fine.

Most hurricanes die rather quickly once they reach 'solid' land.
