    Exclamation

    Well here is a dandy...
Kunal, a forum moderator here, has proudly posted about his new product called The Support Desk.
    http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showth...?threadid=9787

What's really sad to see is his site content is a complete rip off from wonderdesk.com. 90% of it is word for word.

    Compare these:
    http://thedesk.getmonked.net/features.htm
    http://www.wonderdesk.com/features.html
(The Support Desk does not even actually have most of the features listed.)

All of his FAQ's copied word for word from the wonderdesk site:
    http://thedesk.getmonked.net/faq.htm
    http://www.wonderdesk.com/faq.html

Even the license agreement has been copied:
    http://thedesk.getmonked.net/license.htm
    http://www.webwonderland.com/cgi-bin...ment&package=1

Is this the kind of professionalism you'd expect to see from a company selling you a help desk product? Is this forum moderator setting a good example for others?

Anyone considering buying The Support Desk should be wary. You'll be buying from a 17 year old living in India who doesn't take the time to create his own content, and doesn't believe in copyright infringments.

I see what you mean he can always change it, take some screenshots

Damn, and it looked like a good product.
I really don't like such copying (last time I was the victim is about one week!), I will no longer consider it.

Ok, so it`s no longer a good product? I`m still getting it as soon as a couple of bugs are ironed out.

Good product or not, I don't like people who take things without asking. Even if it's only marketing gag.
If this would happen to you, SiperNet, you will think different. Last time this happened to me is just a week ago, I'm quite sure you will not appreciate it when someone takes content from your website to make money and doesn't ask you.
AND I even think that a moderator of WHT should be a good example for others, just as KatanaMan said.

ok.. please show me the exact 'same' content...

i mean.. what karana man is saying is like... hosts having the same wording for bandwidth costs or space costs.... is that copy right infringement?

Just to clear up a few things, support desk by Kunal is an excellent program written in PHP, wonderdesk is an excellent program written in Perl. There are many support programs on the market that are for sale and for free. All of these programs are very similiar because of their functions and services they provide.
There has been no contact from wonderdesk about this issue (nor is there any need to) and in the age of free enterprise, Kunal's new "Support Desk" software is just the newest competition to a growing market.

mm, its different when you use the companys product then some copying is accepted but when you compete directly with a company and take their content thats different..

Does the Desk do what he has listed in his FAQ and features? If so then how much different do you think it could possably be? I mean what if my hosting plans are similar to someone elses and because we are both using cpanel and whm we have similar content on our site should I say that the other guy is wrong? Or maybe I am wrong! I think we need to get to the issue and say to ourselves, is it a good product? Does it actually do what he has listed? If yes, then why is this going to be blown out of proportion because he has information that is just like wonderdesk? I haven`t read all of it but is it really word for word the same?

Main parts are taken WORD by WORD. And there are even features currently NOT in his product who are described on the pages....

OK, then it`s just a little silly. If anything he should have tried to change around the wording and not have used features that aren`t even found in the product.

    I still want it though!

  13. #13
Walter, everything that was and is listed, is in the product!

As for the content.. I have re-done the feature listing... hope there are no controversies over it this time..

Personally I don't care about the wording. The product is excellent!

Oh this is nice... now Kunal is deleting my posts.

    Are you referring to:
"This software and the accompanying files are sold "as is" and without warranties as to performance or merchantability or any other warranties whether expressed or implied."

Please. This is a phrase that all software companies use to protect their software. You'll find it in any law books or software.

You need to completely take down those 3 pages on your site, and write your own from scratch.

Your pages are still showing the same word for word sentences and structure. This is called plagiarism.

i think you need to hit refresh and see the pages again.

Tweaking someone elses words here and there is not creating your own content.

Even then, you are still copying your content from the WonderDesk site.

I'll post a few, because you are still playing games. Here is some text from your site:

Question: Are my technicians notified when a customer adds a new call?
Answer: Yes. They are notified by email or email capable pager or any other method you specify. The technicians are notified depending on what their profile specifications.

    Stolen from:
    http://www.webwonderland.com/cgi-bin...s=1&ID=38&ww=1

Question: Are reference numbers assigned to each call?
Answer: Yes. Your customers receive a unique reference number for each call submitted.

    Stolen from:
    http://www.webwonderland.com/cgi-bin...s=1&ID=28&ww=1

Question: What kind of reporting statistics can the support desk generate?
Answer: the support desk provides real-time statistics that can be seen by clicking on the statistics link, in the admin panel. It displays how many calls are open, closed, average call duration etc etc. Statistics can be broken down by priority, status and category.

    Stolen from:
    http://www.webwonderland.com/cgi-bin...s=1&ID=16&ww=1

    Shall I go on?

    Kunal,
If all you have to worry about are a few text things that match someone else's then you are doing something right.
The important thing is that the program is great and will give all others a run for their money. I just hope the other companies aren't sweating too much from the competition,
    or maybe they are...

    Thumbs down

Regardless, ripping off site content is just bad form. There, unfortunately, are no consequences for this sort of laziness. I've seen hundreds of lines of my original code ripped off and that just ticks me off, but to steal front end site content word for word. Holy cow. There is no excuse. The product may be great, but c'mon! If the product is so great, then it should warrant a handwritten explanation by the developer. How much of the code is ripped off if he can't even bother to write an explanation.

I know y'all like the product, but this type of laziness generally speaks towards a lack of ethics.

    Just my opinion.

    Epi.

    Totally Agree with Epidural

I have to totally agree with Epideral. I am sure a few of you remember a post I made offering everyone jpegs and mechanicals on some of our products. If asked for them, I give them freely and feel good about doing it.
However, when someone just swipes your stuff, it shows a total lack of morals, class, etc. It's a bad situation. We have had folks copy our website (right down to copyright info!) and it only ticked me off because they didn't ask. If someone wants to copy something of yours, isn't it really flattering? Of course it is! As long as they do it the right way. Just my $.02.

    Angry

I must say, I am very disapointed with WebHostingTalk in not taking quick action against Kunal (a forum moderator).

Kunal has deleted many of my posts, but that is not my biggest concern. My biggest concern is this:

Is this the kind of professionalism you'd expect to see from a forum moderator? Is this forum moderator setting good leadership examples for others?

Am I way off the wall here? Or are these kind of things acceptable these days?

i really dont know about you but i dont look upto the forum moderators as role models or leaders. they dont do this full time and they are volunteers. everyone makes mistakes and kunal took the liberty to fix it.
