When you mean unmetered, do you mean a dedicated 100mbit line? Or just a server, that has a port speed of 100mbit and is unmetered?

dedicated 100mbit line and shared 100mbit line both is ok, this server manthly transfer data is about 3000 - 5000 GB, The key is the speeds to china , i found fdcservers.net and 3rdrockhosting.com ,which one is better? or some else

3000 - 5000GB transfer/month, you will need an unmeterred 20mbps line or a shared 100mbps line. I havent' heard about 3rdrockhosting, but for FDC, they are in the central, you can be better with a west coast vendor. Especially for Asia customers, take a look at vendors who has Mzima, NTT or PCCW in their mix

I've tested Ecatel and FDCServers from Hong Kong on a VDSL 10mbit line. When my port is nearly idle or at 80% capacity it didn't really make much of a difference in speed.

From experience USA is faster to China than Europe. The pings from Europe are 350ms while from USA are around 220ms.

Though I asked Ecatel (Netherlands) to improve the routing to Hong Kong and it seems to have improved from 25kbps to 300kbps.

But for awesome speeds to Hong Kong, nothing beats HostGator, can get 800kbps, though not unmetered.

I have no experience with hivelocity.net, though I left fdcservers.net for the following reasons:

    - Server struggled to push 8TB while my Ecatel.net server can push 15TB without problems :-)
    - For some strange unknown reason the entire FDCSERVERS network just seems to be unreachable from time to time
    - Bang for buck, rapidswitch is much better. For $70 or so USD, you get 10TB which is more than what FDCservers can give and the speeds are pretty good but expect similar quality to Ecatel to China.

A friend took this stats for me from Hong Kong:

I can only tell you the speed to Hong Kong and China is a totally different story. China is too big and the network is still bad. There is no best answer, the only thing you can do is try out by yourself.

I really don't know how these value bandwidth providers like fdc or ecatel perform in China. If you or your customer's requirement isn't high, they may still satisfy you but even though you have money go for SoftLayer and ThePlanet, there are still quite a lot of users in China who reported with bad speed and each of theirs data centre may resulted speed very differently to specific region in China.

I will suggest you try out Ecatel/FDC/Hiv(Hiv got a try out promotion) now. If they can't satisfy you, the best beat is head to ThePlanet w/ 3000GB server and with the double bandwidth promotion.

If they can't satisfy you, the best beat is head to ThePlanet w/ 3000GB server and with the double bandwidth promotion.
first thanks,i am have 2 theplanet servers online, and bought them with double BW promontion ,but part of my web visitors still feel slowly, so i want buy another datacenter' server to cover this problem, you are turly right ,china's network still not good, and different area'people have different speeds,it really troubled me,sigh ..

i think this problem have no anwser but with my lucky ,though i am test a lot, maybe the reslut still the same

Based on my experiences, US value bandwidth usually only fast for PCCW network in HK. Like if I'm on a 8M PCCW line, I can push 800k easy but if I'm on other HK networks, the speed may go down significantly to a 40k ~ 160k level. The different can be day and night.

I really don't think cheap bandwidth is suitable for China considered they don't perform well in HK(but usable) and no chance do good in China. Personally, I don't suggest to waste the money and time but if you are rich, try them out and report to us....

You are right. I think the solution is to have servers in a couple of DCs.

Unrelated, possibly stupid question. Do I need an ICP or other license to operate a site-less server in China?

No, even though you are willing to apply one but China government will just reject you because it doesn't located in China and they don't have the power to control or shut your server down.

best shot for you is to get a box in China, otherwise, your server IPs ans sites will often gt banned for no reasons. They now shut down youtube access due to Tibet issue...

You might want to check out DataPipe, they have a datacenter in Hong Kong as well as Shanghai.
