What is considered as a good colo?
Looking for 2X4U colocation. Need to maintain a balance between overseas and US users. 60% users are overseas in India and 40% in US and Europe.
What effects geographic location of colo has on performance or access speed of the application? Is downloading a test file the best test for performance of a colo? Can that be misleading? What other tests should be considered before making a decision on colo choice?
Please recommend the best colo in terms of performance, redundancy and cost effectiveness. Also please provide a test download file to check the speed.

I would recommend somewhere on the west coast, as the majority of your market is in India and you will still get good routing for the US. Europe will suffer a bit, but as India is a larger market for you, you need to make a compromise somewhere.
Geographic location has a big effect on throughput speeds, mostly due to latency. Downloading a test file will only tell you how good your throughput is to the location you're downloading from. Routing will be different from location to location, so it's best to do multiple tests from multiple networks and multiple locations to ensure there aren't any big weak spots. A good colo provider will also have multiple routes to any given location, so you can ask them if they can tweak the routing to improve it.ASTUTE INTERNET: Advanced, customized, and scalable solutions with AS54527 Premium Performance and Canadian Optimized Network (Level3, Shaw, CogecoPeer1, GTT/Tinet),

Yup, the key will be to find someone with a very large amount of routes and not just 1 or 2 backbones. You want diversity to reach across the globe as best possible.

The Best Colo
Is the one that fits you best, not the cheapest or the one that is recommended to you. The best colo is the one that you work with best. We work with some customers very well, while work with others horribly. This is something that happens with every colo and customer.

Most colocation providers' sales departments are happy to provide a test IP and test download file. Asking a few of your trusted users to try diagnostics on the IP and file is a good approach at determining which provider will fit your situation the best. It's important to try these diagnostics from the locations of the users, not just from your own location.
