Do you prefer VPS with control panel or without control panel ?
I just can't imagine VPS without control panel.
Control panel just makes your every day life easy.
Do you still prefer vps without any control panel ?
How difficult is to manage control panel if you have few sites ? & how do you manage it ?

Depends on what I need. I've had servers (not just VPS) with CPs and without CPs and I'm just fine. My knowledge of server management and doing stuff through SSH has increased dramatically over the years.
But if it's for web hosting, I'd rather have a control panel because it does make life easier. And I've used a CP long before I even knew how to connect to SSH so I guess that played a role in that. I bet if I did everything manually from the start, I'd probably be more comfortable without a CP.

If it's for a website then having a control panel would definitely help make life easier even if you have commendable experience with just SSH.

I could do it either way, if I'm looking to host more than one site I'll use a control panel, if I'm looking to be cheap I won't use a control panel or if there's only one site then I'll just do it manually.
Nothing here right now.

A control panel can definitely make things easier - however it does not make all that much difference to me now, as I am very familiar with the CLI.
In general, I would expect novice VPS users to prefer to have a control panel handy - and it not to make all that much difference for the power users.Last edited by BTCentral - Ben; 02-03-2010 at 05:58 PM.

I'm currently learning to do without a control panel. I think in the long run I'll have much more control and my wallet will be much heavier.

Control panels are expensive to add to a VPS (unless it's a plan that includes it already), but yes they do make everything easier for the user, especially if they're coming from shared hosting or are just inexperienced with SSH.

If anyone looks at the VPS from technical perspective (system administrator, etc), they probably don't need a user friendly control panel. However anyone who wants to have a simple and automated management tools on the virtual machine should use any kind of automation panel. One more thing to add is that some virtual machine/container management software are quite sophisticated and provide a lot of information and tools to manage the environment.

If you have sys-admin skills you don't need any CP.
But most people don't, so I guess they would like to see CP shipped with the server.

Its easier to have a Control panel. But if I have 1 to 3 websites max, then I prefer to manage all via SSH.
cpanel is expensive !

Just to let people know there are free alternatives to cpanel that perform just as well. I use virtualmin on many of my VPSes and saves me a lot of time.

It takes time to learn all the commands, but in the long run, it will same you time
VPS without CP are a lot cheaper.

I prefer it with control panel, however it depends on the application you use.

I think that the choice of VPS with Cpanel or without will depend on the skills each end user have

controlpanel is using for usr friendly GUI to administrate the server. If you are expert in all the settings, then there is no need for a controlpanel. otherwise its the best feature for your server as it reduces the admin time.

Sometimes control panel isn't just easy way replacement for command line but contains things which can't be done without... people try to look cool with "If you have sys-admin skills you don't need any CP" etc.. but when did you all try to set up rDNS on your vps without control panel? When did you reload OS without control panel? Not to mention other goodies as example java console when you screw up your vps and can't ssh in, etc.. Noone of my vps providers give me option to set up rDNS through command line. Your does?
Things like that usually works either through CP either don't works at all and it's needed to contact support, explain, wait, etc..
That's just few examples where's better not to be "so cool" sys admin without control panel.

If you are hosting multiple website then for managing them through control panel will be easier task. However you can manage the domains also through the shell but it will be hard to remember the commands and scripts. So control panel is a user friendly interface.

I could administer my server or my VPS without a control panel, but I have one on there. Why? I host a couple of client sites and they are used to cPanel, so I provide cPanel to them. That allows them to change email forwarding, have easy access to webmail, update passwords and the like, so I don't have to do it for them. The cost is not really a factor as the clients pay enough to cover that cost.
For personal use, I tend to either go entirely CLI or use virtualmin.

A very small percentage of our VPS clients elect not to have control panel access. They are not able to use Shell commands

Just because clients prefer to have control panel it doesn't mean that they aren't able to use shell commands or that they even don't use them.
It's not big difference between reboot through control panel or ssh, however most clients prefer to reload new OS by themself instead contacting and waiting support.
