Hi all, and greetings from a very newbie...
I'm going to pick up my X2100 tomorrow, and I'm wondering how far it can be "modded"...
I gonna use it as a workstation (much bang for the bucks) in a 19" rack enclosure, and I will do music with it (yea!). In some weeks, 2 more will arrive to my company and we will host some intranet and web apps on them.
- Is there a way to revive the onboard Firewire port or is it completely missing? Any idea how to give it a Firewire (expansion)? Unfortunately i will need the PCI-e for video upgrade.. The Tyan board also has PS/2 ports, I don't need them so much, however the same question stands for them.
- Is there a way to reduce airflow (spin of fans) in order to make this boat-horn a little bit more silent?
- Has anyone succeeded really mounting it (no shelf please) into a 19 inch railed rack enclosure?
- Does it run XP 64 alrite? I mean do we have all drivers available for it, etc. what are your impressions?
Dumb questions I suppose, but any hints really appreciated..!
Thanks,
Andras

I don't think you will want to be in the room with this thing for very long...it is VERY noisy...even compared to most other 1u/2u servers I own from both Dell and IBM. I think they borrowed the fans from Boeing!

At 100% it is very very very loud, but at least it does throttle down when the temps drop.

Got the X2100 for home. It has arrived with the same bios lockup bug described earlier this thread, and also i noticed that in the bios chars are printed at an unbelievably slow speed like 300 baud, the technician from Sun managed upgraded to the last bios but lockup and "tty mode" just stayed so what theyre gonna do is that they will replace the whole box in some days. ;(
Sorry because this a webhosting forum and im one of the guys who definitely need a workstation, but rackable - i suppose its a common wish among those seriously doing AV, running their multimedia or broadcast studio, etc. My impression is that there is simply no well established solution for this kind of use on the market; if you go for the leading brands, you can either get a super-silent desktop, or a noisy, without-dust-filter, absolutely-not-livingroom-friendly racked server. Or, you can go for those brands that i call "class b" (Supermicro etc.) that have wonderful products indeed, and may have nice service in the USA, but have just the minimum level of support here in middle Europe. Or i can get a funny racked "home multimedia PC", which is usually not a rock-solid design in any means, afaik.
Do you sirs have some recommendations? Silent, reliable, fast, racked AMD64 needed...
Sun X2100 for sale at the same address! ;/

something you can try is to supply 5v instead of 12v to the array of 40mm fans, they will run at much reduced RPM, therefore cut the noise level tremendously. however, you do want to limit yourself to use the slowest Athlon64-3000 s939 chip so that CPU won't overheat.
earlier post in this thread suggested that the slow screen is caused by enabling console-redirect from factory. try turning it off in BIOS setup.

Thanky!
Does anyone know what's the difference between Sun Fire X2100 ATO Base and the regular X2100? Is everything still covered by Sun's warranty? Can i just add anything that i desire to the Base and *still* be covered by warranty ( minus my parts of course)?

Just a quick thought
I ran across this thread and thought I'd share a few notes. My company has had some pretty extensive hands on with Sun "x64" servers, particularly the v20z type, but also some x4100s. In my opinion they are "ok" and probably work great for webhosting (that's not what we do with them).
I would say though that we were tired of paying the "Sun tax" and took a look at the HP DL145s (or 140s if you're an Intel person), for the config we order we were getting WAY WAY cheaper prices (even at discounts off of the Sun website). Plus the HPs come with HDDs standard in the quoted price and FREE rackmount kits.
Have fun!
