Wordpress hosting
I have my own server and would like to start a small hosting business which specifically caters to Wordpress users.
Few questions;
1. Can I get by without the need for Cpanel or some other control panel software?
2. How can I manage multiple Wordpress installations effectively?
3. Should I recommend to my customers to leave an admin account open for my access in case they need help? (I intend to offer support as part of the package)
4. Has anyone integrated enon API or other domain name registration workflow/process into Wordpress?
5. Is it recommended that I run each Wordpress instance on a virtual machine? assuming each of my customers will want to use his/her existing domain name or register a new one?
I plan on using Debian with LAMP.
thanks!

Hi J,
In answer to your questions:
1. You probably could get by but your users would most likely appreciate a control panel especially if you intend to offer email addresses etc
2. Multiple folders with multiple databases will be fine.
3. I would just ask for their login details / for them to create a user should they need support.
4. Can't help on this point I'm afraid.
5. You shouldn't need to run each on a separate virtual machine.

Thanks Jacob!
Has anyone used PayPal recurring billing successfully in a small hosting situation?
Hoping someone could answer #4 for me please...
thanks!

Our managed webhosting stuff is (at the moment) done without a control panel - I don't really recommend it. Unless you're pretty strict on what your users can do with the site, you'll get premature gray hair running around fulfilling all their wishes... most of which they could have helped themselves to with a control panel, which would have saved you a support ticket.
When it works well, automation is a good thing. If you're not wanting to use an established control panel, you'll wind up writing your own (which may be a good thing if all you're planning on hosting is Wordpress as more of a SaaS niche).
I just thought I'd forewarn you about how much effort can be saved by using a control panel (example: cpanel+softaculous I believe can automatically install and configure Wordpress for a new user at the click of a button).
On the bright side though, hammering on those early support tickets as quick as you can is a pretty good way to get an awesome name out there for yourself.I used to run the oldest commercial Mumble host.
