For firewall, I recommend CSF - http://configserver.com/cp/csf.html
For Antivirus, you can install ClamAv from WHM (from plugins).

Yes both are free and easy to install.
For CSF installation, refer http://configserver.com/free/csf/install.txt
For ClamAV, login to your WHM -> go to manage plugins

There is a link "Manage Plugins" and from there you can install ClamAV Connector, if you cant find it type plugin in the search box at the top left and you will see it.

To install CSF, you have to login to SSH, you can use putty if your desktop/laptop has Windows, and execute following commands:
Code:cd /usr/local/src wget http://www.configserver.com/free/csf.tgz tar -xzf csf.tgz cd csf sh install.sh
Code:perl /etc/csf/csftest.pl
When all is good, you will have a nice interface in WHM under Plugins for CSF, browse it, read all the comments and configure it to your liking.
There is much more to be done on VPS than just a firewall and ClamAV, check this section http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=139 and fire a competent server admin to secure/optimise and configure your VPS.Vinsar.Net - Quality Web Hosting at Economical Price on USA & European Servers

I would recommend you Maldet over ClamAV as It works great and regarding firewall, CSF is the best.

For others looking at this, I'll toss in a big "Hell's yeah!" for CSF. I've been using it for probably close to 8+ years, and it's been FANTASTIC!!. It's caused me zero problems (that weren't of my own doing, LOL) and it's flexible and easy to configure.
The author, Chirpy, at ConfigServer.com and his crew have provided great service over the years. I have a dedicated self-managed server with a number of their scripts installed and would recommend all of them.

You can install both ClamAV and maldet. Actually, you must install both ClamAV and maldet, not only one of them. This is because when maldet finds ClamAV installed, it automatically uses the ClamAV scan engine, providing faster scans, with less CPU load and protects from more viruses. This is also stated in the maldet documentation and configuration file.
