Yes, this is correct. X8 boards require registered if you want 32gb ram.

Thanks both of you for the replies.

The X8SIL manual certainly states a max of 16Gb for UDIMM's, but it was also written before 8Gb un-buffered ECC sticks were available.

Posts 167 and 169 above by ViennaAustria indicate s/he is running 4x KVR1333D3E9S/8G (Kingston un-buffered ECC sticks) and has 32Gb showing up in the screenshot of MemTest86.

My only concern with that combo is the fact that MemTest is showing ECC fo be "off" - although in my experience thats not always reliable in MemTest.

I'm hoping someone with the hardware still running can provide smbios info on error correction.

Otherwise, I'll probably just take a punt and buy 2x 8Gb sticks of the Kingston un-buffered stuff to test it out myself (I have 2x 4Gb of it currently - so can test with 24Gb total).

Just to add to this - here are the Kingston part numbers for sticks which should give 32Gb of ram on an X8SIL (based on previous posts in this thread by others, and then some digging through Kingston part numbers):

Note - the quad-rank stuff doesn't need to be 1333MHz as it only runs at 1066MHz with one DIMM per channel, and 800MHz with all four RAM slots populated. Hence the inclusion of part numbers for 1066MHz quad-rank.

    ECC Registered:
    KVR1333D3Q8R9S/8G 4Rx8 1333 MHz
    KVR1066D3Q8R7S/8G 4Rx8 1066 MHz
    KTH-PL310Q8/8G 4Rx8 - 1066 MHz

    ECC un-buffered:
    KVR13E9K2/16I - 2Rx8 8G 1333 MHz
    KVR1333D3E9S/8G - 2Rx8 8G 1333 MHz

Obviously there are other brands available (samsung, hynix, micron etc.) especially once you consider the un-buffered ECC.

    Hi,

because I found a lot useful information here, i want to share my experience. For my X8SIL-F, BIOS 1.0c, I bought 2x KVR1333D3D8R9S/4G. Without any problems, am now using 8Gb RAM. I found this modules on ebay an payed 45€.

Just to add to me previous post - I'm running 4x 8GB of unbuffered DDR3 (4 sticks of Crucial DDR3-1866 ECC).

So yes, it is possible to have 32GB of unbuffered ECC on an X8SIL.

Seems the recommended chips in this thread are no longer being stocked. Is there a preferred ram chip to buy for the X8 boards to reach 32gb ram these days?

I ended up buying 4x 8GB Crucial unbuffered ECC.

    CT102472BA186D - 8GB DDR3 PC3-14900 Unbuffered ECC 1.5V 1024Meg x 72

Has been flawless so far running 24/7 for the last year and a bit in an X8SIL-F, running a Xen hypervisor with a variety of BSD, Linux and Windows VM's.

if those Crucial 8GB DDR3 ECC unbuffered module worked on X8Sxx board, then there is no reason why any other popular 8GB ECC unbufferred DDR3 modules for the X9SCx and X10SLx board wouldn't work either! so, try those modules first (i'm sure you have plenty spares on hand already) before you want to buy more of the same thing.

CT102472BA186D is hard to get as well these days. Anyone got other unbuffered ecc tested recently?

I ended up not buying any more ram for these machines, as the cost didn't make sense given the value of the hardware. We decided to stick with lower ram configurations for our X34xx CPUs and higher ram configurations for dual L5520 / L5639 servers, where the ram on those is less expensive and the servers are more desirable.
