Going to South Africa
Hey guys,
I'm planning on going to South Africa in November to do service projects around the Cape Town area. I'm going with the International Business Club of Arkansas State University, and we are working on building a water treatment plant to serve the nearby villages.
Do any of you have any advice to offer on what to expect when I go? This will be my first time in South Africa, and my first time doing business in another country!

Cape Town is fantastic - awesomely beautiful and the people are very friendly too. I'm from South Africa but live in Port Elizabeth and have lived in Cape Town before and often go there on holiday, I have family members that live there.
As for advice for a foreigner, all I can say is use common sense. In any country there are undesirables that will target easy prey and you they will more than likely pick up you a foreigner and try and take advantage.
Keep your documents in a safe place.
Dont carry large sums of cash or valuables with you.
Plan your routes when traveling so you dont get lost.
Avoid dark lonely spots at night etc
Gangsterism and drugs is rife in certain areas so find out about those areas and make sure you don't ever land up close or near there.
Houtbay, Clifton Beach, Camps Bay, Seapoint, KalkBay, Simonstown - all super amazing places

The above hint about common sense is probably the best advice you'll get.
At this moment, the area is a hotspot for white-targetted robberies, they're in a pretty rough situation at the moment and if it's an easy target, they'll most likely take the chance.
However even with that in mind, it's a beautiful place with some really amazing sights and areas, certainly Clifton Beach!
