    Question

    DialTone posted their new specials today. The two following specials interest me.

    Linux RedHat Server w/Pentium 233 MMX, 64MB RAM, 6.4 GB EIDE;
    Drive, 10/1003COM Network Card, 50GB of Bandwidth, Unmetered IP's

    $0/Setup $159/Month

    Linux RedHat Server w/Celeron 333, 64MB RAM, 6.4 GB EIDE Drive,
    10/100 3COMNetwork Card, 50GB of Bandwidth, Unmetered IP's

    $0/Setup $189/Month

    Which would be the best to host about 12 domains all with moderate cgi usage?

    Either would work just fine. For the extra 30$ I would go for the Celeron. I have a linux server at Dialtone with the following specs:

    Cleron 366
    128 Megs ram
    6.4 gb IDE drive
    etc..

    I have around 30 domains on it and it is very fast. I would recommend upgrading the ram to 128 though. The more the better.

    I have been very happy with my server (going on 2 months)

    Just to let you know that a lot of people will recommend a P3 600 and up with at least 256 megs of ram, but you have to ask yourself, "do I need that much". If you're planning on running a hosting company and want to put anywhere from 200-300 accounts on each server than "yes" you do need that much power, otherwise the specials you mentioned above will most definitely be more than you will need.
